Wayne Christian breaks open game in fifth

Goldsboro snapped a 35-game losing streak with a win over Jones Senior on Wednesday night. On Thursday, the Cougars appeared poised to score their second consecutive win.

Wayne Christian had other ideas. The Eagles scored 12 runs in the top of the fifth inning and dropped the Cougars 12-5.

"Obviously you don't really ever plan on having a 12-run inning," Wayne Christian head coach Curt Hinton said. "I would rather have two runs here, three runs there, but sometimes they come in bunches and that is what happened tonight."

Goldsboro jumped out to a 3-0 lead inthe first inning.

Isaiah Core was hit by a pitch, Ronald Woody singled and Jamal Moses walked to load the bases. Zach Falconer plated one run with a single and Cayce Herring added another on a fielder's choice.

The Cougars' third run came on an overthrow.

Goldsboro added a single run in the third for a 4-0 advantage.

The floodgates opened for the Eagles in the fifth inning. A fielder's choice, a walk and an error loaded the bases before Hunter Burt was hit by a pitch to force in a run.

Bryce Norman, Tanner Rose, Austin Howell and Carlyle Smith each delivered an RBI single to put the Eagles ahead 6-4. Brandon Price supplied the big blow of the inning with a bases-clearing triple that put the visitors ahead 9-4.

Tyler Wallace, Burt and Norman each recorded an RBI single in their respective second at-bats of the inning. When the dust settled, Wayne Christian had sent 16 batters to the plate and seized a 12-4 lead.

"That has happened to us a few times this season," Goldsboro head coach Jackson Massey said. "We have been competitive in a lot of ballgames, but one bad inning has come back to really cost us."

Goldsboro scratched a run across in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Kyker but could come no closer than 12-5.

Norman got the win on the mound for Wayne Christian. Norman allowed one run in four innings of relief. Jamal Moses suffered the loss for the Cougars.

Goldsboro (1-10 overall) plays host to Wallace-Rose Hill on Tuesday. Wayne Christian (5-2) visits Community Christian on April 12.
