Mount Olive College raised more than $400 for Southeastern Cancer Care's "Cure for the Colors" during the month of October.

Trojan assistant athletics director LaToya Lindsey presented a check for $427.45 to Dr. James Atkins of Southeastern Cancer Care shortly before Christmas.

The month of October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Mount Olive has conducted fund-raisers at home athletics events each year. This year, the MOC athletics department partnered with Southeastern Cancer Care and expanded to raise funds and awareness in the fight against numerous forms of cancer.

Trojan athletics teams collected donations at home events in October and each team chose a color that represented a form of cancer in the Cure for the Colors program. The Trojan men's soccer team featured gold for the fight against childhood cancer, the women's volleyball team featured emerald green to represent the battle against liver cancer and the women's soccer team featured lavender for the fight against all forms of cancer.

In addition to Trojan fall sports teams participating in Southeastern Cancer Care's Cure for the Colors, the MOC softball team donned pink for its annual Pink Ribbon Series, a one-day tournament each October that raises funds for Susan G. Komen for the Cure in the battle against breast cancer. Starting next year, the Pink Ribbon Series will also be part of Cure for the Colors.

Mount Olive's efforts in raising funds and awareness in the fight against cancer expand beyond the athletics department. One day during the month of October is designated as a Blue Jeans Day -- or a donation, MOC employees on all seven campuses are permitted to wear blue jeans to work.

Lindsey serves as MOC's coordinator and contact person for the athletics department's annual fund-raising efforts for the prevention of and cure for cancer.

"This year, we decided to focus not only on breast cancer awareness, but also on other forms of cancer," said Lindsey. "I'm glad we were able to assist a local organization. Southeastern Cancer Care was very appreciative of the donations from the college. They are doing great things for the community."

Southeastern Cancer Care is located in Goldsboro and serves as a support organization for cancer patients and their families in Eastern North Carolina. Southeastern Cancer Care provides assistance with basic living, emotional encouragement and cancer care.

Services include assistance with food, utilities and transportation, as well as organizing support groups and providing wigs and prosthetics. The organization also provides financial assistance for treatments and prescriptions.
