Goldsboro dropped by Northampton Co.

Northampton 34, Goldsboro 27

* CONWAY -- Brian Lassiter scored the go-ahead touchdown with 65 seconds left and Northampton completed its comeback for a 34-27 win over Goldsboro on Friday night in the second round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1-AA playoffs.

The Cougars led 20-7 at halftime but were outscored 27-7 in the second half. The Jaguars scored all three of their fourth-quarter touchdowns in the final six minutes. The loss snapped Goldsboro's (10-2) 10-game losing streak.

Cougars' quarterback Julius Murphy, who had thrown for nearly 2,000 yards entering the game, was held to just 3 for 15 passing for 26 yards and an interception. Rasheid Malette paced Goldsboro's rushing attack with 61 yards on 12 carries. Rasheed Rawlings provided a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

In the first quarter, the Cougars' Karon Alston returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown and also took a punt back 55-yards for a score. Alston added an 8-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that put Goldsboro in front 27-19. Northampton rallied for two touchdowns in the final 3 minutes, 55 seconds. The Jaguars rushed for 270 yards on 70 carries.
