JV football

Southern Wayne 39,

* PIKEVILLE -- Southern Wayne concluded its season with a 39-0 win at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Charles B. Aycock on Thursday evening.

Saints' quarterback Tyaire Allen rushed for 101 yards and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Alex Bradley and a 5-yard touchdown pass to Marquaill Roddick. Allen also added a two-point conversion.

Roddick forced a fumble and returned it 70 yards for a score and he also caught a two-point conversion from Carter Jones. Xavier Pearsall provided 75 yards on the ground. James Leonard contributed 53 yards rushing, a 3-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion.

D.J. Graham caught a 10-yard touchdown pass and returned an interception 90 yards for a score.

Lowell Deans recorded nine tackles and Josh Jernigan contributed eight tackles. Southern Wayne finished the season with a 6-3 record, including a 4-2 mark in ECC play.

North Lenoir 38,

Eastern Wayne 26

* La GRANGE -- Eastern Wayne led 20-14 at halftime, but surrendered 24 second-half points in a 38-26 loss on Thursday night at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe North Lenoir.

Devontae Corum, Larry Newsome, Ricky Steiner and Robert Gonzalez each scored a rushing touchdown for the Warriors. Gonzalez finished with 85 yards receiving on five catches. John Stephens returned two kickoffs for a combined 75 yards.

Kevin Larson paced the Eastern Wayne defense with six tackles and three assists. Ramon Rowe also had six tackles and Stephens had four stops.

Middle schools

* Football: Grantham 44, Rosewood 8 -- Grantham's Manny Walker scored on touchdown runs of 60, 35 and 7 yards and caught a two-point conversion. Rikem Shepherd contributed a 30-yard touchdown run, a 35-yard fumble return for a score, a two-point conversion and he also recovered a second fumble. Alex Thompson hauled in an 8-yard touchdown pass from Nick Trolinger. Matt Hollandsworth led the Bulldogs 10 tackles. Grantham (7-0, 3-0 Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II) visits Dillard on Nov. 1.

* Volleyball: Norwayne d. Greenwood 25-9, 25-8, 25-3 -- Norwayne defeated Greenwood in three sets on Thursday. Norwayne also picked up a win over Eastern Wayne earlier in the week. Norwayne (13-0 overall) concludes its season on Nov. 7 when it plays host to Rosewood.
