Boys' soccer
Rosewood 4, Spring Creek 1
* Reed Howell scored three goals and handed out an assist as Rosewood defeated Spring Creek 4-1 on Wednesday night at Branch Pope Field. The loss snapped the Gators' streak of 41 consecutive Carolina 1-A Conference games without a loss.
Prior to Wednesday night, Spring Creek was 38-0-3 against league foes since 2007.
Howell scored a pair of goals in the first half off assists from Thanh Truong and Sy Truong. Howell also assisted on Jyonte Raynor's goal as the Eagles (13-6, 6-2 CC) led 3-0 at halftime. Howell completed his hat trick off Thanh Truong's assist in the second half.
Rosewood and Spring Creek have both earned a spot in the NCHSAA 1-A state playoffs which begin on Oct. 31.
South Johnston 6, North Lenoir 5
* FOUR OAKS -- North Lenoir overcame an early deficit and could not maintain a late lead in a 6-5 loss on Wednesday night at South Johnston in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament finals.
The Hawks were denied their bid for their second consecutive ECC tournament title.
South Johnston took a 2-0 lead just 10 minutes in. Justin Shimer got North Lenoir on the scoreboard and Oscar Avila scored on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box to tie the game at 2-2.
Doerico Sutton's goal before halftime gave the Hawks a 3-2 lead. North Lenoir's lead grew to 5-3 on goals by Avila and Shimer. The Hawks still led 5-3 with 20 minutes remaining before the Trojans pulled to within 5-4.
South Johnston scored twice in the final 10 minutes to complete the comeback.
North Lenoir, the fourth seed out of the ECC, begins play in the NCHSAA 3-A state playoffs on Oct. 31.
Ayden-Grifton 6, Goldsboro 3
* Goldsboro concluded its season with a 6-3 loss to visiting Ayden-Grifton on Wednesday evening.
Jeffery Martinez scored all three goals for the Cougars. Damon Pate and Carlos Banegas each had an assist. Goldsboro finished the season 3-13-0.

* 8-Under: Goldsboro Baby Cougars 31, North Duplin 0 -- Goldsboro put the finishing touches on a regular-season championship in the Neuse River Youth Football League 8-under division with a win over North Duplin. The Cougars (7-0) begin the playoffs in November.
