Trinity of Raleigh 2
* Wayne Country Day defeated Trinity of Raleigh 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Wayne Community College in opening-round play of the inaugural N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A dual team playoffs.
Gianna Democko, Sarah Best, Abbey Pope and Marguax Pope each won singles matches for the Chargers. The doubles teams of Democko-Margaux Pope, Best-Abbey Pope and Mollie Catherine McDonald-Meredith Roethling were also victorious.
Wayne Country Day faces nemesis Greenfield in semifinal-round play Friday at Barton College in Wilson.
C.B. Aycock 5, Triton 1
* PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock advanced to the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team playoffs with a 5-1 victory over Triton on Tuesday afternoon.
The Golden Falcons won several third-set tie-breakers to defeat the Hawks. Ashton Walker improved to 29-0 with a win at No. 1 singles. Katie Gurley, Rachel Jackson, Casie Belom and Cassidy Coerver also prevailed for Aycock.
"It was an outstanding high school tennis match," Golden Falcons' head coach Luke Vail said. "I was proud of the determination and resilience of our players. I think this match proved how much better our team is now compared to early in the season."
Aycock (17-5 overall) visits Big East champion Nash Central next Tuesday.
Wayne Christian 8,
Lawrence Academy 1
* Wayne Christian rolled past Lawrence Academy 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Herman Park in the first round of the NCISAA 1-A dual team playoffs.
Brooke Barfield, Taylor Willman, Elizabeth Sutton, Ally Willman, Abigail Easom and Carla Benton each contributed a singles win for the Eagles.
The doubles teams of Barfield-Taylor Willman and Sutton-Ally Willman also earned victories.
Wayne Christian faces top-seeded Statesville Christian in the state semifinals Friday at Barton College.
Union Pines 6, Eastern Wayne 0
* CAMERON -- Eastern Wayne concluded its season with a 6-0 loss to No. 4-ranked Union Pines in the NCHSAA 3-A dual-team playoffs.
"I thought we competed well against No. 4 state-ranked Union Pines Tuesday afternoon," Warriors' head coach Craig Hassell said. "Savannah Sutton had to me the best match of her career and played tremendous points highlighted by long rallies and using every angle on the court."
Eastern Wayne concluded the year 15-3 and unbeaten in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.
Volleyball
SW Onslow 3, Rosewood 0
* JACKSONVILLE -- Southwest Onslow handed Rosewood a season-ending 27-25, 25-20, 25-21 loss on Tuesday evening in the second round of the NCHSAA 1-A state playoffs.
Scout Anderson distributed 14 assists for the Eagles. Ellen Morgan had nine kills and Anna Ingram contributed eight blocks and four kills.
Rosewood finished the season 16-9.
Boys' soccer
Spring Creek 4, Princeton 0
* Spring Creek clinched the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season championship with a 4-0 victory over Princeton on Monday evening.
Marcial Perez scored a pair of goals for the Gators. Brayan Lopez and Ivan Lemus both supplied goals. Govani Avila, Lopez and Brandon Gonzalez each had assists.
Victor Ortiz recorded the shutout in goal.
Spring Creek visits Rosewood tonight in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Walnut Creek LGA
* Linda Cannon and Evelyn Rose shared low putts during weekly play on the Walnut Creek Country Club links.
Hiromi Sueki and Penny Ritt claimed low gross and low net, respectively.
