Wayne Country Day blanks county archrival

Wayne Country Day has not just cracked the lid on its offense, the Chargers tore it right off.

Cody Neal scored a goal and handed out three assists in Wayne Country Day's 6-0 win over county archrival Wayne Christian on Thursday afternoon.

After going scoreless in their first three games, the Chargers have scored nine goals in their last two contests.

Ramel Carpenter's goal off of Charlie Roethling's assist in the 12th minute gave Wayne Country Day an early 1-0 lead.

Neal's shot in the 20th minute ricocheted off of an Eagles' defender and past Wayne Christian keeper Jamie Tucker for an own goal.

Chargers' keeper Zach Brewer-Kirby made a diving save on Chris Easom's shot in the 38th minute to keep Wayne Christian off the scoreboard.

Wayne Country Day's lead grew to 3-0 in the 47th minute when Miller Gerrard scored off Neal's assist. Neal tallied another assist in the 50th minute on Ken Zhong's goal.

"There's a flow to our offense," Wayne Country Day head coach Steve Ellis said. "When the boys stop playing as individuals and start playing as a team there is a big difference. The more we play the ball and have confidence in each other, especially as we are driving forward the goals are stacking up.

"Hopefully it will continue."

The margin swelled to 5-0 on Neal's penalty kick in the 57th minute.

Brewer-Kirby made a fingertip save on Dylan Smith's shot in the 67th minute.

"Their keeper made some unbelievable saves," Eagles' head coach Daryl Anderson said. "We mis-hit some shots. That is the way it goes sometimes. We just need to work on some things."

Matthew Kierski's goal off of Neal's assist in the 73rd minute capped the Chargers' scoring.

"Cody can dribble the ball well and he is composed," Ellis said. "When he gets his head up and sends those killer passes it makes everyone better."

Wayne Christian (0-2-0 overall) plays host to Neuse Christian today. The Chargers (2-2-1) visit defending Class 1-A independent schools state champion Ridgecroft on Sept. 5.
