Baseball

C.B. Aycock 5, Jacksonville 3

* JACKSONVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock got two important insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning and hung on for a 5-3 win on Tuesday night at Jacksonville in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A state playoffs.

The Golden Falcons visit Currituck County on Friday.

Jacksonville led 2-1 before Aycock junior Adam Pate tied the game at 2-2 with a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning. Later in the fifth, Justin Barbour's two-out hit scored Rider Gardner to put the Golden Falcons in front for good at 3-2.

Aycock (17-8 overall) tacked on two seventh-inning runs on a Cardinals' throwing error.

Jacksonville scored its final run in the home half of the seventh inning.

Collin DuBose led the Golden Falcons with two hits and an RBI. Pate (RBI), Barbour (RBI) and Cameron Taylor each had a hit.

DuBose allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks in five innings to earn the win on the mound. Pate surrendered one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts and a walk in two innings of relief.

West Brunswick 5,

Southern Wayne 4

* SHALLOTE -- Southern Wayne watched a 4-0 lead slip away in the bottom of the seventh inning on Tuesday night in a 5-4 loss at West Brunswick in the second round of the NCHSAA 3-A state playoffs.

The Trojans used a Saints' error, three consecutive hits followed by an out, a double and the game-winning RBI single to complete the improbable comeback.

Jeremy Taylor endured the tough-luck loss on the mound.

"Jeremy had been pitching really well all night," Southern Wayne head coach Trae McKee said. "We got some favorable counts where we just didn't locate. They just continued to rally. We did everything we could to try to stop it."

Jacob Sasser led the Saints (18-10 overall) with three hits. Taylor Raynor supplied two hits and two RBI. Taylor Brock hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning. Clayton Cashwell, Keith Jones, Tyler Gainey and Taylor each had a hit.

It was the final game for 10 Southern Wayne seniors.

Dixon 7, Spring Creek 4

* HOLLY RIDGE -- Dixon broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and handed Spring Creek a 7-4 loss on Tuesday night in the second round of the NCHSAA 1-A state playoffs.

Zack Harrell paced the Gators with three hits and three RBI. Corey Howell supplied two hits. Luke Miller, Chris Nichols and Chad Spurgeon each had a hit. Duane Gurganus pitched a complete game and surrendered seven runs (four earned) on eight hits with strikeouts and one walk and endured the loss.

Spring Creek finished the season 16-9 and set a school record for wins.

North Duplin 4,

Red Springs 3 (6 innings)

* RED SPRINGS -- North Duplin led Red Springs 4-3 with one out in the sixth inning on Tuesday night in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A state playoffs before weather forced the game to be suspended.

The game was ruled official this morning since five innings had been completed.

The Rebels trailed 2-0 before scoring four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Red Springs got a run back in the bottom of the fifth.

Softball

Rosewood 6, Pamlico County 1

* BAYBORO -- Rosewood advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA 1-A state playoffs with a 6-1 win on Tuesday night at Pamlico County.

Callie Thornton's RBI single and Anna Ingram's sacrifice fly put the Eagles in front 2-0 in the first inning. Jordan Dubose provided a two-run triple in the fourth inning. Scout Anderson followed with an RBI single to increase the lead to 5-0. Ingram's RBI fielder's choice in the seventh inning capped Rosewood's scoring.

Dubose, Anderson and Amanda Beckert each had two hits.

Beckert pitched a complete game and scattered five hits with three walks and three strikeouts to earn the win.

The Eagles face either Princeton or Perquimans in the third round on Friday.

Girls' soccer

Statesville Christian 3,

Wayne Country Day 1

* STATESVILLE -- Wayne Country Day had its season come to a close with a 3-1 loss on Tuesday at Statesville Christian in the second round of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A state playoffs.

The Chargers' Catherine Ford tied the game at 1-1 in the 17th minute off Sarah Best's assist.

The game remained tied until the 66th minute as Deborah Degraff's second goal of the game put Statesville in front for good at 2-1. Statesville completed its scoring in the 78th minute.

Wayne Country Day concluded the season 13-7-0.
