Rosewood's Adams shares 4th place after 1st round

Adams shares 4th place

* BUIES CREEK -- Rosewood sophomore Nick Adams finished opening-round play with a 2-over par 74 and shares fourth place overall after day one of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A men's golf championships.

Adams is tied with Tanner Owens (Bishop McGuinness), Cody Hodges (Mt. Airy) and Patrick Cover (Pine Lake Prep). The quartet trails overall leader William Whitacre (Bishop McGuinness) by seven strokes.

Blake Weaver posted a 79 for the Eagles, who finished the day eighth overall in team action with a 336. Bret Robinson shot a 93 and Jaz Verceles-Zara carded a 100.

The two-day, 36-hole tournament concludes today at Keith Hills Country Club.

Best fires 81

* FOXFIRE VILLAGE -- Southern Wayne's Kyle Best finished in the middle of the pack with an 81 during first-day action in the NCHSAA 3-A men's golf championships contested at Foxfire Golf and Country Club.

Play resumed this morning on the par-72, 6,591-yard layout.

The two-day, 36-hole event concludes today.

Lane Tree Ladies

* Betsy Clark captured game-of-the-week honors and chipped on hole No. 3 during play on the Lane Tree Golf Club links.

Debby Edgerton collected low net accolades. Cathy Garris seized low putts and low gross.
