Rosewood thwarted a late-inning rally and handed perennial powerhouse Pender County a 6-4 in opening-round play of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A softball playoffs Friday evening.

It was the Eagles' first-ever postseason win in the program's fast-pitch era and eighth overall including the slow-pitch era. Rosewood had not won a playoff game since 1997.

The Eagles (18-3 overall) tallied six runs on three hits and a bevy of Patriot mistakes. Pender rallied to within 6-4 through 5 1/2 innings.

Amanda Beckert claimed the win inside the pitcher's circle and Callie Thornton collected the save. The duo combined to permit four runs on three hits.

Rosewood travels to defending eastern champion Pamlico on Tuesday.
