Boys' golf
Eagles complete three-peat
* DUDLEY -- Rosewood's Nick Adams claimed medalist honors with a round of 69 and the Eagles claimed their third consecutive Carolina 1-A Conference championship on Thursday at Southern Wayne Country Club.
Rosewood shot a team score of 309 and finished conference play with a 1,553-1,835 stroke play advantage over Goldsboro. Princeton (1,860), North Duplin (1,954), Ayden-Grifton (2,109) and Spring Creek (2,189) rounded out the team scores.
Bret Robinson and Blake Weaver added 18-hole rounds of 77 and 78, respectively, for the Eagles. Teammate Andrew Henn completed Rosewood's scoring with an 85.
The Bulldogs finished second on Thursday with a score of 346. Ryne Woodard paced Princeton with a round of 78 followed by Joel Hines' 82.
The Cougars and Rebels tied for third with a score of 366.
Matt Hall led Goldsboro with a score of 86 and Carlin Thomas added an 89. Ryan Hines led North Duplin with a round of 88. Hunter Brock shot a 92 and Adam Kornegay and William Rivenbark fired a 93.
Ayden-Grifton was fourth with a score of 404. Hugh Chappell's round of 87 led the Chargers.
Rosewood looks to defend its eastern regional title May 7 at Bear Trail Golf Club in Jacksonville.
Baseball
Spring Creek 4, Princeton 3
* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Logan Miller's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Corey Howell and lifted Spring Creek to a 4-3 win over Princeton on Thursday night.
Miller (RBI) and Duane Gurganus (two RBI) led the Gators with two hits apiece. Luke Miller and Howell both supplied a hit. Allen Coor had an RBI.
Gurganus earned the win on the mound. The senior right-hander allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits with nine strikeouts and three walks.
Brad Williamson paced the Bulldogs with two hits. Forrest Stewart and Blake Schultz both had a hit. Austin Hinton had Princeton's lone RBI.
Spring Creek (12-6 overall, 5-1 CC) travels to North Lenoir on Monday, while Princeton (4-10, 1-4) entertains North Duplin on Tuesday.
Wayne Country Day 7, Oakwood 6
* GREENVILLE -- Wayne Country Day rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning and hung on for a 7-6 win at Coastal Plains Independent 1-A rival Oakwood on Thursday.
Cole Davis ignited the comeback with a lead-off double and later scored on Hil Tanner's RBI single. Later in the inning, Tanner advanced to third on Josh Jackson's sacrifice bunt. Tanner scored the winning run on Mason Bland's ground ball to first base.
Davis and Tanner each collected two hits and an RBI. Cody Neal provided a triple, while Bland had a hit and three RBI. Jackson and Thomas Kierski both added a hit.
Davis earned the win with 3 2/3 of scoreless, no-hit relief with six strikeouts and no walks.
The Chargers (9-6 overall, 5-1 CPIC) play host to Faith Christian-Rocky Mount on Tuesday.
C.B. Aycock 4, South Johnston 1
* FOUR OAKS -- Justin Barbour supplied three hits and Collin DuBose pitched 5 1/3 strong innings as Charles B. Aycock defeated South Johnston 4-1 on Thursday night.
Cameron Taylor, Collin DuBose and Bryant Stafford each contributed a hit and an RBI.
Dubose allowed nine hits and had nine strikeouts with no walks to pick up the win on the mound. Stafford pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and did not surrender a hit while recording three strikeouts with one walk to collect the save.
The Golden Falcons (13-7 overall, 6-4 ECC) entertain Cleveland on Tuesday.
New Bern 7, Eastern Wayne 1
* New Bern took advantage of Eastern Wayne's defensive miscues and picked up a 7-1, non-conference win Thursday evening in New Hope.
"When you walk eight (batters) and don't have but two earned runs, you're not going to win," Eastern Wayne head coach Jabo Fulghum said. "They hit in some timely spots and made us pay for our mistakes."
Nolan James took the pitching loss. Ryan Faucette provided five innings of three-hit, two-strikeout relief. Jeremy Lancaster threw the final two innings.
Hunter Barnett led the Warriors with three hits, including a double. Faucette (RBI) and Zack Mozingo each batted 1-for-3.
Softball
C.B. Aycock 5, South Johnston 4
* FOUR OAKS -- Connor Davis' RBI double in the top of the seventh inning scored the go-ahead run and Charles B. Aycock escaped with a 5-4 win on Thursday night at Eastern Carolina 3-A nemesis South Johnston.
The Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the game.
The Golden Falcons got a pair of runs back on an error in the fourth inning. South Johnston increased its lead to 4-2 in the fifth inning on a walk and a triple.
Meredith Burroughs' solo home run in the top of the sixth inning pulled Aycock to within 4-3. Misty Edwards' RBI single tied the game at 4-4 before Davis' double put the Golden Falcons in front in the seventh.
Reagan Herndon led the Golden Falcons with two hits. Davis and Edwards both had a hit and an RBI. Ivy Hartzell, Cierra Harris and Rachel Jordan all contributed a hit.
Brooke Bell earned the win inside the pitcher's circle.
Aycock (19-2 overall, 10 ECC) entertains Cleveland on Tuesday.
Cape Fear Christian 14,
Wayne Christian 2 (5 inn.)
* Third-ranked Cape Fear Christian handed Carolina Christian 1-A Conference rival Wayne Christian a 14-2 loss on Thursday.
Kelsey Kornegay and Courtney Barrow each had a double. Victoria Combs endured the loss inside the pitcher's circle.
The Eagles (4-3 overall, 1-2 CCC) play host to Community Christian on April 27.
Princeton 19,
Spring Creek 2 (5 inn.)
* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Princeton scored 12 runs in the first two innings and rolled to a 19-2 Carolina 1-A Conference win in five innings on Thursday night at Spring Creek.
The Bulldogs pounded out 15 hits.
Girls' soccer
C.B. Aycock 5, South Johnston 1
* FOUR OAKS -- Cheyenne Warrick scored five goals and Charles B. Aycock defeated Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe South Johnston 5-1 on Thursday night.
Alex Strickland handed out two assists and Emily Borel and Madison Mercer each had one assist. Alex Van Meir was in goal for the Golden Falcons.
Aycock (13-3-0 overall, 10-0 ECC) plays host to Cleveland on Tuesday.
Boys' track
Golden Falcons compete
* LaGRANGE -- Charles B. Aycock compiled a team score of 95 points to win a four-team meet on Thursday afternoon at North Lenoir.
Eastern Wayne finished second with a score of 66 and South Johnston was third with 56 points. North Lenoir was fourth with 31.
The Golden Falcons' Cade Ivey claimed the 800 meters and Austin Snowden prevailed in the 300 meter hurdles. Khalil Owens won the 400 meters and Andre South finished first in the discus. Aycock's 1600 and 3200 meter relay teams also won.
Eagles prevail
* Rosewood finished with a team score of 73 to win a three-team Carolina 1-A Conference meet with Goldsboro and Princeton on Thursday afternoon.
Princeton was second with 66 points ahead of Goldsboro's 43.
The Eagles' Greg Cavenaugh tied for first place with the Cougars' Rasheid Mallette in the high jump. Rosewood's Joshua Davis won the 400 meter dash and Jay Sellers claimed the 300 meter hurdles. Jaylan Sneed out ran the competition in the 800 meters and Jamari McGowan prevailed in the 200 meters.
Nick Britt finished first in the 3200 meters.
The Eagles won the 1600 meter relay.
Girls' track
Rosewood tops competition
* Rosewood won seven different events and tallied a team score of 68 to win a three-team Carolina 1-A Conference meet with Goldsboro and Princeton on Thursday afternoon.
The Cougars were second with 53 points. The Bulldogs finished third with 41.
The Eagles' Krystal Yelverton won the long jump. Alysse Atwell claimed the triple jump and the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. Bryanna Lee finished first in the pole vault and Ashley Duran prevailed in the 3,200-meter run.
Rosewood's 800- and 1,600-meter relay teams were also victorious.
Warriors finish second
* LaGRANGE -- Eastern Wayne finished second with a team score of 75 in a four-team Eastern Carolina 3-A meet on Thursday afternoon at North Lenoir.
Charles B. Aycock won the meet with 96 points. South Johnston was third with 39 points and North Lenoir was fourth with 31.
The Warriors' Bri'anna Coleman prevailed in the 100 and 200 meters. Ashley Ames won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Ra'Juana Boyette finished first in the long jump.
Eastern Wayne also won the 400-meter relay.
