The layoff for spring break clearly hurt much of the field at the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference golf match at Lane Tree Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
Caleb Jones was the exception to the rule.
The Eastern Wayne standout fired a three-under round of 69 to take home medalist honors. Jones bested Southern Wayne's Kyle Best by nine strokes.
"I was really pleased with Caleb for a lot of reasons today," Eastern Wayne head coach Scott Waller said. "He made a couple of birdies early in the round and he kept his focus and never let the round get away from him."
Led by Best's round of 78, Southern Wayne finished tied for first in the team competition with South Johnston. Each team fired a four-man total of 341.
Julian Mitchell (87), Jonathan Barrow (88) and Jonathan Langston (88) rounded out the team score for Southern Wayne. The Saints took over first place in the conference standings and will carry a 17-shot lead into the final match.
"I was happy that we won the match and that we battled on a tough day," Southern Wayne head coach Jeremy Joyner said. "But I also know that we left a lot of shots out on the course that could have helped us build an even bigger lead on Triton."
Charles B. Aycock finished third in the team standings with a 345 total led by Battle Burnette's round of 79. Jordan Salter (84), Dylan Mitchell (89) and Matthew Ivey (93) completed the Golden Falcons' total.
Eastern Wayne (348) finished fourth in the team standings. Willis Underwood (91), Ty Schmeltzer (93) and Hidematsu Sueki (95) rounded-out the Warriors' total.
Triton (360), Cleveland (363) and North Lenoir (370) completed the team totals.
Will Raynor paced North Lenoir with a round of 85. Alex Brownlee added an 88 for the Hawks.
The seven Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference teams will be back in action on April 23 at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Club.
