Blazers have great day
* CARTHAGE -- The Wayne County Blazers 13-Under AAU boys' basketball team captured the USSSA Carolina Pride Invitational crown and automatically qualified for the USSSA state tournament.
The Blazers opened play with a 65-9 romp over Overhills Thunder 13U. Isaiah Hatchett recorded 11 points and seven rebounds. Darrian Oates contributed nine points and four assists.
Aaron Smith, Jacob Owens and Cole Atwood supplied seven points apiece. PJ Hill posted eight points, four assists and four steals.
Wayne County slipped past Overhills Thunder 14U, 61-54, in its second game of the day-long tournament. Damien Darden pumped in a team-high 17 points and picked the Thunder for five steals. DJ Waters chipped in 11 points and three assists.
Jacob Norris registered nine points and pulled down four rebounds. Hill collected eight points and six rebounds.
The Blazers ended tournament action with a 58-48 triumph over Carolina Pride. Oates poured in 17 points, dished out three assists and logged two steals. Atwood knocked down nine points and hauled down six rebounds.
Christian Anderson (seven points, three steals) and Owens (six points, eight rebounds) also contributed to the win.
Wayne County (5-2 overall) returns to action in the state tournament, scheduled for Memorial Day weekend in Greensboro.
