GREENVILLE -- Senior catcher Zach Wright cranked a first-inning home run during a five-run uprising, but No. 25-ranked East Carolina couldn't keep the momentum in an 18-11, non-conference loss to Virginia Commonwealth on Tuesday afternoon.
Bill Cullen pounded out four hits and drove in four runs for VCU, while Heath Dwyer tossed 61/3 efficient innings of relief at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The teams combined for 34 hits and the Pirates' pitching staff permitted nine walks and plunked five VCU batters. ECU starter Jake Harris surrendered five earned runs on five hits and three walks in just 11/3 innings of work. Deshorn Lake took the loss.
Cannon, Philip Clark, Jack Reinheimer and John Wooten combined for eight of the Pirates' 16 hits. Wright finished with three RBI.
