MOUNT OLIVE -- JUCO transfer Geno Escalante cranked out two doubles and collected four RBI, and Will Bynum slugged the go-ahead home run in Mount Olive's 12-3, non-conference triumph over California (Pa.) University at Scarborough Field on Thursday afternoon.
The Trojans (11-5 overall) claimed their fourth consecutive victory behind starting pitcher Zach Smith, who improved to 2-2 on the mound. Justin Weaver, Nolan Lancaster and Chris Hinton shut out the Vulcans the rest of the way.
Jermaine Berry provided three hits. At least nine different Trojans recorded at least one hit on the day.
MOC entertains King (Tenn.) for a three-game Conference Carolinas series this weekend. The teams play a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
Trojans get sweep
MOUNT OLIVE -- Jennifer Jones mashed a solo home run and delivered the tie-breaking, two-RBI single as Mount Olive defeated St. Andrews, 3-2, in game one of their Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon.
Sarah Saunders worked six-plus innings inside the pitcher's circle and claimed the win. Lauren Smith picked up her first collegiate save.
Katie Moore crushed a two-out, solo homer and added a two-run double as the Trojans claimed the nightcap, 9-0, at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
Smith tossed a four-hitter and earned her fifth shutout of the season.
The Trojans (13-9 overall, 2-0 CC) travel to Coker next Wednesday.
Netters go 2-0
MOUNT OLIVE -- Akio Mariano and Stanley Roffe combined to lose just three games at Nos. 4 and 6 singles, respectively, and the Mount Olive College men's tennis team throttled Shepherd (W. Va.) University, 9-0, on Thursday afternoon.
Third-seeded Diogo Sender and fifth-seeded Murilo Pelegrino each prevailed in straight sets. Edgar Bub erased a one-set deficit and triumphed at No. 1 singles, while Gabriel Santana picked up a three-set win at No. 2 singles.
The Trojan men (6-4 overall) swept the doubles.
On the women's side, fourth-seeded Pietra Viana posted her second straight shutout of the season during an 8-1 win over Shepherd. Teammates Francesca Ceppi, Samara Paldinho and Marine Becker each grabbed a singles point.
MOC (8-2) swept the doubles.
Both Trojan teams return to action Saturday at Conference Carolinas rival Pfeiffer University.
