PIKEVILLE -- The Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference's most prolific goal scorer is on pace to match or possibly top her historic season from a year ago.
Junior Cheyenne Warrick scored five goals and handed out an assist and Charles B. Aycock routed ECC foe Triton 8-0 on Tuesday night. It was the ECC opener for both teams.
After tallying 64 goals and being named the ECC player-of-the-year in 2011, Warrick has scored seven times in the Golden Falcons' first three games.
"My teammates always remind me of last year," Warrick said. "They always tell me to go out there and get some more goals this year. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't have any goals."
Emily Borel scored off Warrick's assist in the opening minute. Borel returned the favor to Warrick four minutes later.
"We've talked about jumping on teams early," Aycock assistant coach Byron Adkins said. "It was nice to get some early goals and build some momentum."
Warrick won a loose ball, dribbled to the top of the 18-yard box and beat Hawks' keeper Mackenzie Brickman in the ninth minute to increase the lead to 3-0. Three minutes later, Warrick struck again off Anja Kliss' assist.
"Tonight was fun," Warrick said. "I'm helping my team win and it's not all about me, it's about my team winning. Triton left some gaps in the defense and I just saw the goal and I shot."
Cheynne Craft fed Warrick with a long pass down the sideline in the 21st minute. Warrick dribbled past multiple Triton defenders and into the 18-yard box before slipping a shot past Brickman as the lead grew to 5-0.
"We had a player like Cheyenne here before in Alex Rodriguez," Adkins said. "When she gets the ball she brings so much with it. She gets all of her teammates involved. When she has a good night, everybody has a good night."
Borel scored off Alex Strickland's assist four minutes into the second half. Warrick scored her fifth goal of the night in the 55th minute off Borel's assist. Strickland capped the scoring in the 57th minute on Samantha Parrish's assist.
Warrick also recorded four saves in goal during the second half.
The Golden Falcons (2-1-0 overall) entertain Wilson Fike in non-conference play today.
