MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive slugged three of its five home runs during a six-run third inning, and the Trojans held off Belmont Abbey to win its Conference Carolinas opener 14-10 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Scarborough Field.
Bradon Reitano, Jacob Rogers and Antonio Callaway each hit two-run blasts as both squads took advantage of strong winds blowing out to left field. In the nightcap, Mike Mercurio was 5-for-5, including a grand slam as Mount Olive rolled 21-7.
In the opener, Callaway's blast gave the Trojans a 9-1 lead, but no lead was safe in the weather conditions.
In game two, Mount Olive (7-4 overall, 2-0 in Conference Carolinas) sent at least nine batters to the plate in three of the seven innings. Already leading 2-1, the Trojans sent 13 men to the plate during an eight-run outburst. Mercurio and Reitano each had two hits in the inning, while Geno Escalante belted his second homer of the season.
The two teams conclude their series this afternoon. First pitch is 1 p.m.
