Owens advances in 3-A

* GREENSBORO -- Charles B. Aycock junior Khaleil Owens triumphed on opening day of the 2012 N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A wrestling championships, while teammate Daniel Romo tumbled into the consolation portion of the tournament.

Owens, a two-time state qualifier, claimed a 7-5 overtime victory over Kings Mountain's Quincey Toms in their 152-pound bout. Romo, who is making his first state appearance, was pinned by Cardinal Gibbons' Matt Williams in the second period of their 132-pound match.

The 1-A tournament starts today.

Rosewood's Nick Quillen puts his 58-0 record on the line at 120 pounds. Teammates Angel Jaramillo and Taylor McGill are competing in the 113- and 195-pound divisions, respectively.

Princeton 182-pounder Forrest Stewart and heavyweight James Hawley also wrestle today.

Boys' basketball

Faith Christian 53, Shining Light 40

* DURHAM -- Faith Christian erupted for 20 third-quarter points and handed Shining Light a season-ending, 53-40 defeat in quarterfinal-round play of the N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A boys' state tournament Thursday evening.

The Coastal Region champ, Faith Christian opposes Woodland Baptist of Winston-Salem in the final four today. Tip-off is 6 p.m. at Fellowship Christian.

The Conquerors led 13-11 after one period, only to see the Royal Crusaders forge a 20-20 tie at intermission in their elite eight battle. Faith outscored Shining Light 20-6 in the third period and cruised to its 19th victory of the season.

Aaron Hill and Wes Caudle paced the Conquerors' offensive attack with 17 points apiece. Michael Clarke contributed eight points.
