MOUNT OLIVE -- Former NCAA champion Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne University emerged victorious in six of seven sets and swept a weekend series from the Mount Olive College men's volleyball team.
The Division I Mastodons, members of the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, handed the Trojans a 25-12, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16 loss on Friday evening. IPFW claimed the rematch Saturday morning with a 29-27, 25-20, 25-17 decision inside Kornegay Arena.
MOC dropped to 2-4 overall this season.
On Friday, junior outside hitter Adam Miracle cranked out a match 14 kills and logged one block. Middle blocker John Nunns contributed eight kills and five blocks, while Jack Tutty logged seven kills and four blocks. Dan Arnold and Tutty led the defense with five and three digs, respectively.
Jackson Metichecchia supplied 33 assists.
Nunns and Alex Rivero posted 10 kills apiece against IPFW on Saturday. Miracle (seven kills), Tutty (six kills) and Lukas Hoelzl (five kills) also contributed to the Trojans' 39-kill performance as a team. Tutty recorded five blocks, while Arnold picked up a team-high eight digs.
Metichecchia doled out 35 assists.
The Trojans begin a three-game road swing Thursday at St. Francis (Pa.). They will travel to College Park (Md.) for contests against 2010 NCAA runner-up Penn State on Friday and defending national champion Ohio State on Saturday.
