MOC women easily dispatch Knights

MOUNT OLIVE -- It was a mismatch from the very beginning.

Mount Olive College, one of the top women's basketball teams in Conference Carolinas, welcomed one of the worst teams in the country on Wednesday night.

St. Andrew's fell behind early and the result was a 98-60 blowout in the Trojans' favor.

"I was pleased with the way we played early because I think our girls were more focused on what we needed to do to win and not who was on the other side," Wendy Lee said. "You can not overlook anyone and one of the things we have told our girls is that if we focus on getting better every night the opponent doesn't matter."

Mount Olive led 26-9 with 10 minutes to play in the first half. Andrea Jones scored 13 points during that stretch as the Trojans got whatever shot they wanted against the drastically undersized Knights.

By halftime, the Mount Olive lead had ballooned to 52-21.

"Obviously we played well but it was not by any means perfect," Lee said. "I would have like to see us force a few more turnovers with our pressure and there is always room to work on things like boxing out, but overall it was a good half for us."

The onslaught continued in the second half as Mount Olive opened up a 41-point lead midway through the half.

Jones led the Mount Olive offense with 18 points. Tamara Nesmith added 14 points. Alyssa Luebs and Ty Wallace each contributed 11 points, while Luebs paced the Trojans with a career-high 16 rebounds.

A total of 15 different Mount Olive players tallied at least one point in the game.

"Getting to have a a night where everyone got to play was fun for everybody," Lee said. "Everyone was up and everyone was supportive of their teammates."

So far this season the Knights are 0-13 overall and 0-6 in conference play. They have been beaten by an average of 44.2 points per game. Mount Olive dominated the Knights last season as well, winning their contest in the Kornegay Arena by a 107-55 final.

Mount Olive (12-3 overall, 6-0 CC) travels to Limestone on Saturday.
