Area teams hit the pool
* With conference championships and eastern regionals just weeks away, swimmers worked to shave precious seconds off their respective times during a multi-team meet at the Goldsboro Family Y.
The Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference championship is Jan. 24 at B.G. Darden Natatorium, while the 3-A and 1-A/2-A regionals are slated for early February. The Y will play host to the 3-A event.
Southern Wayne's Chad Davis touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1 minute, 0.77 seconds. He finished second behind Goldsboro's Logan Cole in the 200 free. Cole won the 100 free in 52.16 seconds.
Charles B. Aycock's Sam Chastain logged a first-place time of 1:04.41 in the 100 back, and swam the third leg on two Golden Falcon relays. The quartet placed third in the 200 free and fourth in the 200 medley.
Fellow Golden Falcon Demion Creel captured the 50 free in 24.78 seconds, and swam the anchor leg on the 400 free relay which placed third. Defending state champ Devin Hall competed unopposed in the 1-meter diving event, and compiled a season-high 312.7 points.
Goldsboro's Zach Darden and Timmy Vick placed first in the 200 individual medley (IM) and 100 breaststroke, respectively.
On the girls' side, Aycock senior Bryce Connolly in the 200 free and 50 free. Teammate Savannah Sauls emerged the runner-up in the 200 IM and 100 free, while Kylie Robertson recorded a meet-winning time of 1:22.73 in the 100 breaststroke. Alexus Lemasters took fourth in the 500 free.
Eastern Wayne's Emily Spangler placed third in the 500 free.
Rosewood's Jessica Mitchell ended up fifth in the 100 breaststroke and seventh in the 50 free. Goldsboro's Mikayla Huf claimed a top-10 time in the 50 free, while teammate Kristin Huddleston placed among the top 10 in the 100 back.

* FAYETTEVILLE -- Sarah Best and Ashanti Hardy pumped in 13 points apiece in Wayne Country Day's 49-16 road win over Freedom Christian.
The Chargers played without senior Catherine Ford, who rested with minor injuries.
WCDS (5-4 overall) opens its Coastal Plains Independent Conference schedule at The Oakwood School today.
