Girls' basketball

Princeton 48, North Duplin 36

* CALYPSO -- Princeton improved to 2-0 in Carolina 1-A Conference play with a 48-36 win on Tuesday night at North Duplin.

Savanna Massengill led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Nicole Melvin added nine points.

"Savanna is a very smart player," Princeton head coach Marty Gurganus said. "She knows what to do when she gets the ball. She was very good for us tonight in the high-post."

Tearra Ammons scored 16 points for the Rebels.

The Bulldogs (7-6 overall, 2-0) travel to Goldsboro on Friday, while North Duplin (2-9, 0-2) visits Ayden-Grifton.

Cape Fear Christian 46, Wayne Christian 24

* ERWIN -- Wayne Christian endured a 46-24 loss on Tuesday night at Cape Fear Christian.

Victoria Combs led the Eagles with eight points. Sara Davis contributed five points and seven rebounds. Courtney Barrow had four points and nine rebounds.

Boys' basketball

Cape Fear Christian 77, Wayne Christian 74

* ERWIN -- Wayne Christian watched a 15-point halftime lead slip away in a 77-74 loss in overtime on Tuesday night at Cape Fear Christian.

Dylan Smith supplied 21 points for the Eagles. Seth Slush contributed 18 points and Chase Darden had 16. Chris Easom added 12 points.

Wayne Christian (3-12 overall) entertains Trinity Christian of Raleigh on Friday.

Freedom Christian 73, Wayne Country Day 68

* FAYETTEVILLE -- Freedom Christian pulled away in the final quarter, and held off Wayne Country Day 73-68 on Tuesday evening.

Brandon McCarter paced the Chargers with 24 points, 17 rebounds and five assists. Fellow seniors Aaron Forde and Hil Tanner contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Wayne Country Day (5-8 overall) tips off its 2012 Coastal Plains Independent Conference season Thursday at The Oakwood School. Game time is 8 p.m.

Golf

Deering scores ace

* Mike Deering collected his first-ever hole-in-one while playing at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. Deering used a 6-iron to ace the No. 4 hole.

Travis Smith witnessed the feat.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 83, Freedom Christian 54 -- Marlon Coley paced the Chargers' offense and led five players in double figures with 19 points. Dennis Mitchell contributed 14 points, while Jamel Forde and Kris Cooley scored 13 points apiece. Tyler Talton chipped in 10 points. WCDS(7-3 overall) travels to The Oakwood School on Thursday.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Christian 35, Cape Fear Christian 23 -- Hunter Burt paced the Eagles with 11 points. Matthew Swets had nine points. Wayne Christian (5-5) visits Neuse Charter on Friday.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 51, Freedom Christian 35 -- Charlie Roethling knocked down a team-high 12 points in the Chargers' road win. Preston Edwards provided 10 points, while Jacob Norris collected nine points. WCDS remained unbeaten in eight outings this season and continues play Thursday at The Oakwood School.

* Girls' basketball: Wayne Christian 23, Cape Fear Christian 22 -- Emily Wells scored seven points for the Eagles. Jody Gurley and Brooke Slusher both provided six points.
