MISENHEIMER -- Mount Olive College answered Pfeiffer University's 3-point shooting with clutch scoring of its own and strong defense during a come-from-behind, 79-73 victory in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action Thursday evening.
Andrea Jones delivered a team-high 22 points, including the tying and go-ahead baskets for the Trojans, who remained unbeaten in league play. Tamara Nesmith pumped in 20 points, while Jasmine McDonald and Destinee Webb tallied 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Nesmith collected nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. McDonald picked the Falcons for five steals.
Pfeiffer (6-5 overall, 1-1 CC) built a 16-point lead in the opening half, but Mount Olive (8-3, 2-0) trimmed the deficit to 11 by intermission. The Falcons hit two 3-pointers to stretch the lead back to 15 points early in the second half, and then the Trojans' defense took over.
MOC limited Pfeiffer to just five field goals the remainder of the contest.
The Trojans outscored the Falcons 29-15 down the stretch and grabbed the lead for good on Jones' basket off McDonald's assist. Pfeiffer climbed within a single possession, but Jones and Alyssa Luebs each blocked a shot to preserve the lead.
MOC finished with eight blocked shots for the game.
Pfeiffer got to within three once more, but Webb and Luebs hit a pair of free throws apiece to put the game away.
Mount Olive continues a three-game road swing at league newcomer King (Tenn.) College on Saturday. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
