Girls' basketball
Goldsboro 54, North Lenoir 21
* Goldsboro made a commitment to get the job done Wednesday evening.
And the Cougars did it in dominating fashion.
Brandy Johnson pumped in 14 points in a reserve role and starting forward Alexus Myles added 12 points in a 54-21 romp over North Lenoir inside Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium. Goldsboro prevailed for the seventh time in eight outings this season.
"Tonight was a better defensive night for us, getting in the passing lanes and getting our hands up ... getting a lot of transition baskets," said second-year Cougars head coach Latina Bullock.
The Cougars forced 25 turnovers and picked the Hawks for eight steals.
Goldsboro had 23 team assists on 24 made field goals, and limited North Lenoir to single-digit scoring in the first three quarters.
"I told the team no one girl can do this by themself," said Bullock of the team's unselfish play. "That's how we play ... as a team together and they all realize that's what it's going to take for us to be successful this season."
Quoya Porter emerged North Lenoir's top scorer with seven points. Raye Harte provided four points, two steals and eight rebounds off the bench.
Lakewood 72, Rosewood 41
* Lakewood built a 37-10 halftime lead and cruised to a 72-41 win at Rosewood on Wednesday evening.
Logan Bill led the Eagles (1-7) with 14 points. Jennifer Liles added eight points. The Leopards Tiesha Rich led all scorers with 16 points.
Rosewood faces Rocky Mount Prep on Monday in the Bulldog Christmas Invitational at Princeton High School. Tip-off is 4 p.m.
North Duplin 37, Union 20
* CLINTON -- North Duplin earned its second win of the season with a 37-20 triumph over Union on Wednesday night.
Tearra Ammons paced the Rebels' offense with 17 points. Jessica Jones added 12 points in the win.
North Duplin (2-5 overall) plays host to Union on Dec. 27.
Boys' basketball
Southern Wayne 68,
Jones Senior 43
* DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne dominated on both ends of the floor in a 68-43 win over Jones Senior on Wednesday night.
The Saints got 19 points from Ronnell Outlaw in the victory. Jaylen Roberts added 11 points and 16 rebounds. Jameil Price and Trey Allen each added 10 points in the win.
Southern Wayne (9-1 overall) entertains Cleveland on Friday.
Eastern Wayne 54,
Ayden-Grifton 50
* Eastern Wayne avenged an earlier loss to Ayden-Grifton with a 54-50 victory on Wednesday night in New Hope.
Lee Atkinson paced the Warriors with 28 points. Josiah Davis added 13 points and seven rebounds.
Rondell Bell led Ayden-Grifton with 25 points.
Eastern Wayne (5-3 overall) travels to Wilson Hunt on Friday.
Union 64, North Duplin 44
* CLINTON -- Noth Duplin fell behind by double digits early and never recovered in a 64-44 loss to Union on Wednesday night.
Breyon Johnson led the way for the Rebels with 15 points. Tyler Royal added 10 points in the defeat.
North Duplin (2-5 overall) plays host to Union on Dec. 27.
Cleveland 39, Princeton 37
* CLAYTON -- Cleveland bounced back from a loss to Eastern Wayne with a 39-37 victory over Princeton on Wednesday night.
Bobby Stenberg led the Rams with nine points.
The Dawgs were paced by C.J. Jefferys' 13-point night.
Princeton faces Spring Creek on Monday in the annual Bulldog Christmas Invitational.
Wayne Country Day 69,
Braemar (Australia) 58
* Wayne Country Day got back above the .500 mark with a 69-58 win over Braemar on Wednesday night.
The Chargers improved to 4-3 overall behind 25 points from Deshar Thomas. Brandon McCarter added 19 points in the win. Hil Tanner finished with 11 markers.
Wayne Country Day will play Community Christian at the N.C. School for the Deaf on Friday.
JV sports
* Girls' basketball: Wayne Country Day 26, St. Mary's 16 -- Logan Harrell and Taylor Sledge each scored six points to lead the Chargers. Bailee Creger pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Wayne Country Day improved to 3-2 overall.
* Boys' basketball: Southern Wayne 67, Jones Senior 38 -- Southern Wayne improved to 9-0 on the season with a 67-38 win over Jones Senior on Wednesday night. Xzavier Pearsall led the way for Southern Wayne with 14 points. Ty Pearsall and Jatarvis Bradshaw each added 10 points in the victory.
* Boys' baslketball: Wayne Country Day 51, Braemar (Australia) 43 -- Dennis Mitchell paced the Wayne Country Day offense with 20 points. Jamel Ford added 13 points and Marlon Coley finished with 10 points in the win.
Middle schools
* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 51, St. Mary's 35 -- Preston Edwards led the Chargers with 17 points. Jacob Norris added eight points in the win. Wayne Country Day improved to 5-0 on the season.
