WCDS boys fall at home

Desperately needing to throw a counter-punch at its opponent, Wayne Country Day instead suffered an early knockout Tuesday evening.

Trailing Trinity of Christian of Fayetteville 29-21 at halftime, the Chargers failed to rally in the third quarter in a 59-32 non-conference loss.

Eight first-quarter points from Brandon McCarter kept Wayne Country Day within striking distance as the Crusaders led 15-10 after the first eight minutes.

The Chargers pulled to within 23-19 on Deshar Thomas' jump shot. Back-to-back layups from Chris Lindsay gave Trinity a 29-21 cushion at halftime.

Trinity began the third quarter on a 9-0 run capped by Wesley Sprinkle's 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 38-21. Frank Jackson's layup increased the deficit to 43-27.

"Right now we're just not playing well," Wayne Country Day head coach Terry Jones said. "We're not looking like a very good team at all and I am a representation of what my team looks like. If we don't do things the right way, we're not going to win."

The Chargers (3-3 overall) were outscored 30-11 in the second half and held to three points in the fourth quarter. McCarter scored a game-high 15 points to go with nine rebounds and two blocks. Thomas had nine points.

"We have some guys who are kind of stepping up into leadership positions who were role players last year behind Josh Gregory," Jones said. "It doesn't help to have someone like him leave your team and you have to kind of fill that void. Our thought right now is let's not play harder, let's play smarter."
