Cleveland wrestlers take down C.B. Aycock

Aycock drops ECC opener

* PIKEVILLE -- Cleveland dominated the upper weights and upended defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference dual-team champion Charles B. Aycock, 46-31, on Tuesday evening.

It was the league opener for both teams.

The Rams (8-4 overall, 1-0 ECC) collected pins during a five-match span that started at 170 pounds and ended at heavyweight. The Golden Falcons' inexperience surfaced in those weight classes.

Lower weights Zach Howard (106 pounds), Nick Jones (113), Daniel Romo (130), Jaquan Walker (145), Preston Tucker (152) and Khaleil Owens (160) each supplied an individual win for Aycock.

Cleveland, the ECC regular-season and tournament runner-up last season, triumphed in eight of 13 contested matches overall.

"We knew the inexperience at the heavier weights would be a challenge for us against Cleveland, we were just unable to capitalize at the lower weights," said third-year Golden Falcons head coach Marc Peck.

Aycock (9-1) turned back long-time nemesis Southern Nash, 46-31.

Jordan Bailey (120), David Romo (126), Daniel Romo, Tucker, Owens, Broc Doyle, Howard and Jones each claimed an individual victory. Doyle earned a pivotal pin over the Firebirds' Travis Collins at 195 pounds.

Rosewood takes two

* PRINCETON -- Rosewood heavyweight Jacob Guthrie seized his first-ever victory over Princeton's James Hawley, and the Eagles emerged victorious in a three-team, non-conference dual Tuesday evening.

Guthrie defeated Hawley 3-2 until he permitted a third-period reversal with two seconds remaining in the match. Guthrie also pinned Wilson Fike's John Glennon in the second period to finish the night unbeaten.

The Eagles defeated Princeton 54-24 and Fike 54-27.

"We had some really exciting matches and huge wins tonight during the tri-match," said Rosewood head coach Bill Edmundson. "Quadre Ayers wrestled very well. Carlos (Mata) wrestled an exciting match against Fike's Austin Jones, securing a second-period pin. Taylor McGill and Jacob anchored the big-guy matches with key wins showing great technique and poise.

"Freshman Sam Drew is looking very sharp."

Rosewood also received individual wins from Kaleb Smith, Chris Lane, Nick Quillen, Jordan Batson, Malique Boyd, Jacob Holliday and Evan Reiss.
