Chapel Hill defeats Goldsboro in boys basketball

Former Goldsboro High School boys' basketball coach Todd Morgan returned to the Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium on Friday night.

Only this time on the visitor's bench as the head coach at Chapel Hill High School.

Morgan's new team took care of business and seized a 75-69 win over Goldsboro.

"It was great to come back into this old gym and see a lot of old friends," Morgan said. "I love playing here and tonight was a little bit extra special."

Chapel Hill point guard Denzel Ingram made sure that the Tigers walked away with a win. Ingram dominated the game from start to finish and tallied 37 points, 10 assists and four rebounds.

"(Ingram) was the game tonight, what else can you say," Goldsboro head coach Patrick Reynell said. "He took what was given to him by the defense all game long... If we tried to play up tight on him he would drive and find a seem, but if we dropped back he would knock down the 15-foot jumper."

Goldsboro jumped out to an early lead after one period as the Cougar forwards hit the glass and delivered several putbacks. Octavius Alston finished the first quarter with nine points and four rebounds to lead Goldsboro to a 17-15 advantage.

Ingram caught fire in the second quarter and pushed the Tigers ahead by two points at the intermission. The second half belonged to Ingram, who scored 24 of his 37 points after the break.

"Denzel is a Division-I point guard and he has offers rolling in for a reason," Morgan said. "Not only does he score in a variety of ways, he is excellent late in the game. If we can get to the final three minutes with a lead it's nice to have a kid that you can absolutely trust with the ball."

Anthony Vanhook added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers. Andrew Grant finished with 10 points in the win.

Quavus Holloman paced the Goldsboro offense with 22 points. Alston contributed 16 points and 10 boards. Demarian Henderson scored 13 points and eight rebounds despite battling foul trouble in the first half.

"I thought our big guys, Octavius and Demarian each played really well tonight," Reynell said. "We were able to hang with (Chapel Hill) on the glass and score points in the paint."

Goldsboro (2-4 overall) will travel to Southern Nash on Monday night.
