Southern Wayne rallies past Goldsboro

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne and Goldsboro did not get off to the start that either team had expected on Friday night.

The Saints rallied to earn their desired ending.

Southern Wayne recorded a 58-51 win at the expense of its county rival in a game that was delayed several minutes when two young female basketball fans got into a fight near the Goldsboro bench.

While the sheriff's deputies and administrators tried to restore order the teams were sent back to their respective locker rooms to wait out the commotion. Once the game began, neither team could find any offensive feel.

"We had a couple of stretches there where we couldn'tget a shot to fall," Goldsboro head coach Patrick Reynell said. "We missed a couple of chip shots and then Southern Wayne made a couple of jumpers and that has kind of been the story of our season through three games."

After three quarters the Saints held a 37-35 lead, but watched as Goldsboro regained the advantage on back-to-back baskets by Demarian Henderson and Jalen Sprueil. Southern Wayne answered with consecutive buckets by Ronell Outlaw and Quintae Bradshaw minutes later.

It was Outlaw and Bradshaw who eventually dealt the knockout blow for the Saints (5-1 overall). With four minutes to play Outlaw buried a fade-away 3-point basket that gave the Saints a 51-47 advantage. Goldsboro answered with a bucket, but Bradshaw finished strong on the next two Saint possessions with a putback and a pair of free throws.

"We knew with Jamiel (Price) and Ronell out there that we were going to have to drive ot the basket because that is what those guys do well," Southern Wayne head coach Russell Stephens said. "When our guards drove, Quintae stepped down to the block with his hands up and was able to finish inside."

Price and Outlaw each finished with 14 points. Jaylen Roberts added 12 points and Bradshaw tallied nine points.

Henderson led the Cougars with 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Sprueil finished with 12 points.

Goldsboro (0-3) plays host to Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday night. Southern Wayne is on the road to Wilson Fike the same night.
