NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Keisha Henderson connected on a pair of key free throws with 20 seconds left, and Newberry (S.C.) College nipped Mount Olive 67-65 in a women's college basketball game Sunday afternoon at Eleazer Arena.
It was the season opener for both teams.
Consecutive steals from JUCO transfer Tamara Nesmith and Kristin Mobley helped the Trojans take their final lead, 64-62, with 67 seconds left in regulation.
A Henderson steal gave junior guard Kendra Brown the chance to put the game away, but Brown made just one-of-two free throws with nine seconds left.
MOC had one more chance.
The Wolves fouled Joneiqua Gary before she could launch a tying 3-pointer. With less than a second left, Gary made a free throw, then intentionally missed the second. The Trojans were unable to corral the rebound before time expired.
MOC sophomore Jasmine McDonald joined Andrea Jones (21 points) in double figures 16 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Gary handed out five assists.
Nesmith and Alyssa Luebs each fouled out for the Trojans, who lost a nine-point second-half lead and were whistled for 28 fouls compared to just 14 for the Wolves. Newberry spent most of the second half in the double bonus and attempted 19 more free throws than MOC for the game.
The Trojans (0-1 overall) open the home portion of their schedule Wednesday against Virginia State. Tip-off is 6 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
