Spring Creek bests Goldsboro soccer

Goldsboro scored more goals against Spring Creek than any other Carolina 1-A Conference team over the past three seasons on Wednesday night.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, scoring three goals provided little solace after a 5-3 defeat.

"I have a good team and talented team, but it hasn't shown for us on the scoreboard since the conference season started," said first-year Goldsboro head coach Jim Phillips. "I think we are continuing to get better and I am excited to think about where this team will be a in a couple of weeks."

Goldsboro jumped on top in the third minute of the game when Damon Pate completed a long run with a perfectly placed shot that eluded the Gators' keeper. Spring Creek answered in the 12th minute when Antonio Fajardo collected a pass from Pedro Soto and scored.

The Cougars made the score 2-1 before the half when Osiel Valdez collected a pass from Jeffrey Martinez and fired a shot into the net in the 36th minute.

A rousing halftime speech by Gators head coach Amanda Ramfjord led to inspired play by the visitors in the second half.

"I did not like the way we played in the first half," Ramfjord said. "I felt like we played with more energy in the second half and we were able to create some opportunities."

Spring Creek tied the game in the 45th minute when Eric Fuentez fired a corner kick into the 18-yard box and Omar Zavela headed it toward the net. The ball deflected off a Cougar defender and was drilled into the net by Gator forward Marcos Casteneda.

The Gators took the lead three minutes later when David Vega fired a 30-yard shot that glanced off the right post and into the net past a diving keeper. Spring Creek made the score 4-2 on Vega's second goal of the game in the 60th minute.

Fajardo capped the visitors' tally in the 65th minute with his second goal of the contest. Goldsboro pulled within 5-3 in the 70th minute when Ethan Minshew scored on a free kick from 20 yards out.

"We have shown over the past few games we can score a lot of goals," said Phillips. "But unfortunately we have also shown the propensity to give up a lot of goals, too."

Goldsboro (1-8-0 overall, 0-3-0 CC) travels to Princeton on Monday, while Spring Creek (4-2-1, 3-0) is the guest of Hobbton tonight.
