Girls' tennis

Eastern Wayne 9, North Lenoir 0

* Eastern Wayne swept through singles play against a short-handed North Lenoir squad and rolled to a 9-0 victory on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tennis scene on Wednesday afternoon.

Savannah Sutton, Jackie Johnson, Kristina Childre, Cailey Soloman, Leslie Wiggins and Brittany Brinson each claimed a singles point for the Warriors.

The tandems of Johnson-Childre, Soloman-Wiggins and Brinson-Villareal each prevailed during doubles play.

Eastern Wayne (13-4 overall, 10-2 ECC) clinched the No. 2 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs, which begin Oct. 18.

C.B. Aycock 8, Rocky Mount 1

* ROCKY MOUNT -- Charles B. Aycock captured all six singles points en route to a 9-0 nonconference victory over Rocky Mount on Wednesday afternoon.

Brooke Barfield, Ashton Walker, Katie Gurley, Brittany Parrish, Misty Edwards and Caroline Bone each prevailed in their respective singles match.

The tandems of Barfield-Walker and Parrish-Bone won during doubles action.

C.B. Aycock (20-1 overall) concludes regular-season conference play today at Southern Wayne.

Cross country

Princeton boys, RHS girls take first

* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Defending Carolina 1-A Conference boys' cross country champion placed five runners among the top 15, and claimed its fourth league victory of the season Wednesday afternoon at Spring Creek.

Matt Edwards crossed the finish line sixth in 21 minutes, 16 seconds for the Dogs, who collected 31 points. The Gators took second with 60 points, followed by North Duplin (62), Rosewood (95) and Goldsboro (104).

Quinn Dougherty (21:22), Ethan Anderson (21:40), Lane Dougherty (21:43) and Will Denning (22:27) completed Princeton's team score.

Rosewood senior Nick Britt placed fourth overall in 20:41.

Spring Creek freshman Allen Coor claimed fifth in 21:08, while Francisco Quirino emerged the Rebels' top finisher with a 12th-place effort of 22:02.

Tyler Lane posted Goldsboro's best time.

On the girls' side, archrivals Rosewood and Princeton ended up tied in the team portion. However, the Eagles clinched the victory since Holly Heath emerged the higher sixth-place finisher among the two teams.

Kasie Elliott led Rosewood's cause with a fifth-place time of 29:07. Teammate Ashley Duran crossed the line eighth, while Charleigh Smith was 10th in 29:33. The Eagles' Brynna Lee and Christine Conger placed 11th and 12th, respectively.

The Rebels' Samantha Wilkins won her second consecutive meet with a first-place time of 26:36. Goldsboro's Grayson Collins (27:24) grabbed second, followed by Princeton's Taylor Smith (27:44), North Duplin's Genesis Orellano (28:05) and the Cougars' Tiara Maynor (28:10).

The teams return to action Oct. 12 at Goldsboro.

Boys' soccer

North Lenoir 4, Triton 2

* ERWIN -- North Lenoir continued its stellar play in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference ranks with a 4-2 win over Triton on Wednesday night.

Justin Shimer scored a pair of goals for the Hawks in the first half and added an assist in the second half. Chastin Radford and Jake Olejniczak each added one goal after the intermission to close out the win.

Tyler Gray and Filiberto Gonzalez each finished with one assist for the Hawks.

North Lenoir (12-2 overall, 7-1 ECC) entertains South Johnston on Monday.

South Johnston 5, C.B. Aycock 0

* FOUR OAKS -- South Jonston scored four goals in the opening half and rolled past C.B. Aycock 5-0 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference soccer action on Wednesday night.

C.B. Aycock (8-4 overall, 4-4 ECC) plays host to Cleveland on Monday.

Middle schools

* Volleyball: Spring Creek d. Grantham 25-14, 18-25, 25-16, 29-27 -- Veronica Martinez led the Gators with four aces in the win. Lexie Reyes finished with two kills and Ashley Mariner added eight service points. Spring Creek improved to 4-4 overall.
