C.B. Aycock remains unbeaten in ECC action

PIKEVILLE -- Ho hum.

Yawn.

The mastery of a county rival continues.

Charles B. Aycock swept the singles and doubles courts, and handed Southern Wayne a 9-0 loss in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference girls' tennis action Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Falcons improved to 21-0 against the Saints since 2001.

"I've got a bunch of competitive girls," said CBA head coach Brad Matthews. "They don't like to lose and they don't like to give up games. That's just something you can't coach. They work really hard and this is the best tennis team I've ever coached."

Ashton Walker, Katie Gurley, Brittany Parrish and Caroline Bone each posted a straight-set shutout in their respective singles match. Top-seeded Brooke Barfield rallied from a 2-1 opening-set deficit to defeat senior Michala Best, 6-2, 6-0.

Fifth-seeded Misty Edwards dropped one game in the second set.

Overall, the Golden Falcons (11-0 overall, 7-0 ECC) lost just six games in singles and doubles combined.

"I just wanted them to go out and play one game at a time, play one point at a time and try to win every single one of them," said Matthews. "I told them 'don't look ahead.' Southern Wayne is a pretty good team and when you give up only six games against them, that says a lot."

Barfield-Walker, Gurley-Edwards and Parrish-Bone completed Aycock's sweep in doubles.

The Saints (4-5) fell to 3-3 in league play this season.

Southern Wayne returns four of six starters off last year's team and has just one senior this season.
