South Johnston - C.B. Aycock soccer

PIKEVILLE -- For years now, Charles B. Aycock has earned a reputation as a soccer powerhouse by outplaying opponents and handing out lopsided losses to all comers.

Beating the Golden Falcons in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play had become almost unheard of. Knocking off Aycock in ECC play at home was nearly impossible.

These are obviously different times.

Jose Lucas scored three goals and South Johnston continued to assert itself a contender for its third straight ECC regular-season title with a 5-0 win Monday evening at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Chase Thompson just missed giving the Golden Falcons an early lead as his shot went just wide of the goal in the first minute. Aycock (2-2-0 overall) struggled to threaten again for the remainder of the half.

Derek Brewington's long throw-in in the 10th minute deflected of the fingers off Golden Falcons' keeper Nick Hilker and bounced off the head of a Trojans' player before landing in the back of the net.

Lucas' scored from inside the 18-yard box in the 29th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. South Johnston held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal in the first half.

Trey Millard's shot off a cross from Ronnie Person in the 45th minute nearly cut the deficit in half.

Following a 33-minute lightning delay, South Johnston (4-2-1, 2-0-0 ECC) went to work offensively. Lucas collected a rebound off a shot by Brewington and slipped it past Hilker to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Brewington beat Hilker from 40 yards out in the 78th minute and Lucas' long-range blast in the 80th minute capped the scoring. Hilker finished with eight saves.

"We just went to sleep the last five minutes of the game and gave up three goals," said Aycock head coach Kevin Adkins. "We didn't mark up and if you don't mark up you can't stop them. They're just inexperienced players and we've got to go back to the drawing board and work hard. We didn't put away some scoring chances early and we had to reap the consequences of having to battle all night."

Winners of the past six ECC conference tournaments, the Golden Falcons fell to 1-2 in conference play. Aycock didn't suffer its first loss against a conference opponent until its seventh ECC game of the season a year ago.

"I think South Johnston is going to be strong this year and probably next year," said Adkins. "Triton has got a fairly young ballclub and we've got a young ballclub right now. I think this conference will be very competitive after this year and the next couple of years."
