MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive jumped out to leads of five or more points in each of the first two sets, but tournament champion Lander (S.C.) University rallied for a 25-16, 25-20, 25-18 win over the Trojans in the final match of the MOC Women's Volleyball Invitational Saturday afternoon at Kornegay Arena.

Setter Destiny Ma'ave-Kuewa represented Trojans on the all-tournament team. Lander setter Jessica Register earned MVP honors.

Erika Conner finished with eight kills for Mount Olive, while Ma'ave-Kuewa added 23 assists. Mallory Wasik paced Lander with 11 kills, while Register finished with 32 assists and Kubal had 14 digs.

The Trojans dropped a contest against Conference Carolinas newcomer North Greenville (S.C.). Carly White led Mount Olive with nine kills and two blocks, while Conner added eight kills and eight digs. Ma'ave-Kuewa recorded 21 assists. As a team, the Trojans finished with 26 kills and 27 errors in 84 attempts.

Mount Olive (3-4 overall) opens conference play at home Tuesday against in-state foe St. Andrews, which reinstated its volleyball program after a one-year absence. First serve is 7 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.

Stanley notches goal

MOUNT OLIVE -- Lindsey Stanley supplied the game-winning goal in the 78th minute, and Mount Olive turned back Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.), 1-0, during their women's soccer match at Amon Field.

Stanley ran onto a pass from Carlee Bock just inside the penalty box and manuevered around a Railspitter defender. Stanley spun to the inside, got a one-on-one opportunity against LMU keeper Kayla Hanson, and tucked it away into the left corner of the net.

MOC goalie Lyndsey McIntyre earned the shutout between the pipes.

The Trojans (1-1-1 overall) open Conference Carolinas play at home Saturday against King (Tenn.) College. Kickoff is 4 p.m.

Another shutout loss

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College goalkeeper Rob Gray turned away one tough shot after another, but Lenoir-Rhyne had enough firepower in a 3-0, men's soccer triumph at Amon Field.

Gray finished with 10 saves.

The Trojans (0-4-0 overall) suffered their third consecutive shutout loss of the season. They travel to Francis Marion (S.C.) University on Tuesday, and launch their Conference Carolinas season at home Saturday against King (Tenn.) College.

Long recognized

HIGH POINT -- Mount Olive College's Chelsea Long was selected the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas women's cross country runner-of-the-week for week No. 2.

Long shattered an eight-year-old MOC women's cross country record for the fastest time in the 5k as she won the MOC Invitational for the second year in a row and helped lead the Trojans to the team title. Long posted a time of 18 minutes, 31.80 seconds, eclipsing the previous record by more than 11 seconds and beating her own personal best by 16 seconds.

Long, who finished first out of 24 runners, also won the event as a freshman last year.

Another shutout loss

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Mount Olive's Kyle Ham tied for 40th overall out of 85 golfers, and the Trojans finished 14th in the team competition during the USC Aiken/Kiawah Island Men's Golf Invitational.

The two-day, 36-hole tournament was contested on the Cougar Point Golf Course links. It was MOC's season-opening meet.

Ham opened the Invitational with a first-round 73 and followed that up with a second-round 82. Teammates Dalton Gore (47th), Kyle Simpson (55th) and David Shields (55th) completed the team's scoring.

The Trojans fired a four-player total of 630 -- one stroke behind Catawba and three shots ahead of Bluefield State (W. Va.) University.

MOC will co-host the Century LinkInvitational, scheduled for Sept. 19-20, at Lane Tree Golf Course.
