NRYFL jamboree moved back

MOUNT OLIVE -- The 16th annual Neuse River Youth Football League jamboree, a 24-team event, has been rescheduled due to expected inclement weather from Hurricane Irene.

Event organizer Alex Ferrell said Friday morning that the preseason exhibition will stretch over three days next week. The 12-Under teams will scrimmage Monday. The 8U teams will duel Tuesday and the jamboree will conclude with 10U scrimmages on Wednesday.

Play begins each day at 6 p.m.

Admission is $3 for adults and school-age children.

The 12U exhibition will begin with Mount Olive facing Spring Creek and Grantham takes on Rosewood. Charles B. Aycock, last year's 12U tournament runner-up to Mount Olive, will participate along with Eastern Wayne and Princeton.

Mount Olive and Spring Creek will kick off the 8U action on Tuesday.

The same two teams will launch the final day of 10U scrimmages on Wednesday.

Each team will run a series of offensive plays within a 15-minute time limit against the opposing team's defense, and then switch. Each team is guaranteed to face two opponents during the scrimmage.

The league was formed in 1995 and restructured to the current NRYFL in 2000. It's the largest sports organization in the area with more than 800 participants each year.

The NRYFL is staffed entirely by volunteers and works to create an instructional environment that emphasizes safety, player development and football fundamentals. The league strives to inspire youth to develop the life skills of academics, sportsmanship, high character, fitness, teamwork and ambition.

Regular-season play begins Sept. 6 for the 10-Under and 12U teams. The 8U squads kick off their respective seasons Sept. 12.
