WCDS 4, Ravenscroft 0
* RALEIGH -- Catherine Langston notched two goals and Wayne Country Day blanked Raleigh Ravenscroft, 4-0, in its season-opening match Wednesday afternoon.
Margaret Tanner and Crawford Tanner also scored for the Chargers.
WCDS (1-0-0 overall) is the guest of St. Mary's on Sept. 1
Girls' tennis
C.B. Aycock 9, Wilson Fike 0
* WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock continued its strong start to the tennis season with a 9-0 victory over Wilson Fike on Wednesday.
Brooke Barfield, Ashton Walker, Katie Gurley, Brittany Parrish, Misty Edwards and Caroline Bone each prevailed in their respective singles matches.
The tandems of Barfield-Walker, Gurley-Edwards and Parrish-Bone each won in doubles play.
C.B. Aycock (5-0 overall, 1-0 ECC) travels to North Lenoir today.
Nash Central 7, Eastern Wayne 2
* NASHVILLE -- State-ranked Nash Central swept all six singles matches en route to a 7-2 win over Eastern Wayne on Wednesday afternoon.
In doubles action, the pairs of Grace Delbridge-Blake Govan and Kristina Childre-McKenna Dove each claimed a win for the Warriors.
Eastern Wayne (2-1 overall, 1-0 ECC) entertains Cleveland today.
Boys' soccer
North Lenoir 5, South Lenoir 1
* DEEP RUN -- North Lenoir jumped out to an early lead and cruised past county rival South Lenoir 5-1 on the pitch Wednesday afternoon.
Oscar Avila opened the scoring in the seventh minute for the Hawks. Justin Shimer made the game 2-0 when he scored on a pass from Jake Olejniczak.
Tyler Gray scored back-to-back goals early in the second half and Shimer rounded out the North Lenoir tally with his second golf in the 64th minute.
Chastin Radford recorded one assist in the win.
North Lenoir (3-1-0 overall) travels to East Duplin on Monday.
North Johnston 2, Rosewood 0
* KENLY -- North Johnston controlled the ball throughout a 2-0 win over Rosewood on Wednesday night.
The home team finished with a 22-2 advantage in shots.
Rosewood (0-1-1 overall) travels to Midway on Aug. 31.
Volleyball
Rosewood 3, Eastern Wayne 1
* Rosewood defeated Eastern Wayne for the second time this season with a 26-24, 25-20, 28-30, 25-23 decision on Wednesday night.
Rachel McCollum finished with four kills and two blocks.
Allyson Newsome added five kills and one block in the defeat.
Stephanie Smith recorded six aces.
Eastern Wayne (1-2 overall) plays host to Goldsboro today.
Hobbton 3, Goldsboro 0
* NEWTON GROVE -- Hobbton avenged an earlier loss to Goldsoro with a 27-25, 25-10, 25-16 win on Wednesday night.
Goldsboro (1-3 overall) will take on Eastern Wayne today.
Golf
Lane Tree LGA
* Libby Newsome claimed game-of-the-week honors during play on the Lane Tree Golf Club links. Nan Jarrell and Teresa Shearin won low net and low putts, respectively.
JV sports
* Football: Eastern Wayne 30, Goldsboro 16 -- Goldsboro jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the opening minutes, but could not hold on as Eastern Wayne rallied for the win. Toric Best tossed two touchdown passes to Joe Baker for the Cougars' two scores. Rasheed Mallette led Goldsboro in rushing with 82 yards on 14 carries.
* Football: Southern Wayne 16, Northern Nash 8 -- Southern Wayne held off a late charge for a 16-8 win over Northern Nash on Wednesday night. Xavier Pearsall led the Saints on the ground with 130 yards, including a 90-yard touchdown run. Jacob Hollingsworth found Clayton Cashwell with a 15-yard scoring strike for the Saints other touchdown. Markim McNair scored both two-point conversions. Charles Brewer led the Saints' defense with 11 tackles. Rontrell Jones scooped up two fumble recoveries. Southern Wayne improved to 1-1 overall.
* Volleyball: Goldsboro d. Hobbton 17-25, 25-21, 25-22 -- Maddie Jara led the Cougars with six aces. Paige Evans and Bailey Ellis each contributed five aces. Goldsboro improved to 2-1 overall.
