SEVEN SPRINGS -- Wayne Christian boasts skill and experience.
Spring Creek is a team still learning the ropes of varsity volleyball.
The Eagles prevailed on Thursday night when the two teams met for their respective regular-season openers. Wayne Christian won 25-16, 25-14, 25-17.
"I was pleased for it being the first match," Eagles head coach Rick Moore said. "I think we are about where I want this team to be after all of the preseason practices."
In the opening set, both teams had flashes of brilliance offset by multiple unforced errors. Wayne Christian seized advantage of the set behind consecutive aces from Katie Isenhower that increased the visitors' lead to 21-15 and put the set out of reach.
The Eagles cruised through the second set as hitters Jessica Swets and Britney O'Hara combined for six kills.
"I think we played all right in stretches, but overall we didn't have the consistent offense that we needed," Spring Creek head coach Deanna Morris said. "I think we are ahead of where we were at the start of the season last year, but we still need to get better."
The Gators were paced by Kelsey Rogers' four kills and three blocks. Sarah Ford added four kills and two aces in the defeat.
Wayne Christian's offense was led by O'Hara's eight kills. Swets added seven kills and two blocks. Isenhower finished with six aces.
"We have five returning players from last year and a senior that hasn't played since she was in seventh grade," Moore said. "With four seniors, you kind of expect to be ready to play each time you step on the court."
Wayne Christian (1-0 overall) plays host to Cape Fear Christian tonight. Spring Creek (0-1) entertains Wayne Country Day on Tuesday.
