MOUNT OLIVE -- Josh Bagley had a historical day to remember as UNC Pembroke turned back Columbus State (Ga.) University, 6-0, in opening-round play of the 2011 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional at Scarborough Field.
Bagley logged 13 strikeouts and permitted two hits for the Braves, who won their first-ever postseason game in program history. Bagley (6-3) gave up a single to Ryan Lewis to lead off the game, and struck out the side in the third inning after giving up a walk and a single.
Bagley went on to retire 17 of the next 18 batters he faced and benefited from a double-play grounder in the eighth inning.
Keith Whitman broke a scoreless tie with a lead-off home run -- the first of two on the afternoon -- in the bottom of the fourth inning. Aaron Parnell tripled one out later, but Columbus State third baseman Bruce Alter tagged Parnell out on a ground ball. Alter also threw a runner out at the plate in the second inning.
Columbus State starter Thomas Campbell (7-4) kept the Cougars within a run through six innings, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth with his fourth strikeout of the game.
UNC Pembroke broke the game open and opposes Catawba today at 7 p.m.

MOUNT OLIVE -- Josh Hohn delivered the game-winning hit in the 10th inning, and Catawba outlasted Francis Marion (S.C.) University, 2-1, on opening day of the 2011 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional at Scarborough Field.
FMU grabbed a 1-0, first-inning lead when Michael Wilson was hit by a pitch and scored on Preston Shuey's two-out single.
Brett Underwood supplied the game-tying hit -- a two-out, RBI single -- in what could have been the Indians' final at-bat in the ninth inning. That lifted the Indians into today's 7 p.m. contest against No. 7-ranked UNC Pembroke.
Catawba's Lomascolo (9-3) did not allow a runner past second base the remainder of the game after Shuey's first-inning single. He got a double-play ball in the eighth, and retired the side in order in both the ninth and 10th innings.
Lomascolo tossed a four-hitter and his lone strikeout of the game came in the 10th inning against Brian Paulhus, who had drawn bases on balls in each of his previous three plate appearances.
Francis Marion starter Don Sandifer took a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning and struck out the leadoff batter before Austin Moyer drilled a single up the middle. Pinch-runner Keaton Hawks advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Sandifer put the Patriots within one out of a win with his eighth strikeout of the game. Hawks scored the tying run when Underwood lined a single to left field.
Julio Zubillaga led off the top of the 10th with a single off of Francis Marion reliever Jarrott Hooks (4-1) and went to second on Ryan Bostian's sacrifice. Hohn followed with a single to left and Zubillaga scored without a throw.
