Baseball

Spring Creek 9, Union 1

* CLINTON -- Corey Howell and Duane Gurganus combined to throw a three-hitter and Spring Creek picked up a 9-1 win against Union in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A playoffs Thursday evening.

Zack Harrell, Ricky Brayboy and Gurganus each had two hits. Matt Rogers added a two-run double and Ian Ladd provided a hit.

The Gators recorded nine stolen bases.

Spring Creek (13-11 overall) visits James Kenan in the second round on Tuesday.

North Lenoir 4, West Brunswick 3

* SHALLOTE -- Brian Hardy delivered the game-winning RBI single in the top of the seventh inning as North Lenoir slipped past West Brunswick 4-3 in the NCHSAA 3-A playoffs Thursday evening.

Hardy finished with three hits and two RBI. Rand Jackson (RBI) and Spencer Bass also had three hits apiece. Grayson Phillips added a home run and Chastin Radford supplied a hit.

Caleb Kearney earned the win on the mound with 11/3 innings of scoreless relief. Hawks' starting pitcher John Delaney allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 52/3 innings.

North Lenoir (17-8 overall) travels to Nash Central on Tuesday.

James Kenan 7,

Southwest Onslow 6, 9 innings

* WARSAW -- Tyler Haney scored the game-winning run on a passed ball and James Kenan got past Southwest Onslow 7-6 in opening-round play of the NCHSAA 1-A playoffs Thursday evening.

Haney reached on a walk in the bottom of the ninth inning and advanced to third base on a pair of wild pitches.

Kedron Foster (two RBI), Haney, Seth Bass and Ricky Langston each had a hit for the Tigers.

Haney earned the win in 32/3 innings of relief. He and Langston combined to record 17 strikeouts.

James Kenan (11-10 overall) plays host to Spring Creek on Tuesday.

East Columbus 10,

Princeton 0, 5 innings

* LAKE WACCAMAW -- Senior Houston Barnes threw a no-hitter and East Columbus defeated Princeton, 10-0, in a five-inning affair during first-round action in the NCHSAA 1-A playoffs Thursday evening.

Barnes, a right-hander, logged five strikeouts and walked three Bulldogs in the mercy rule-shortened contest. Barnes aided his cause with a 3-for-4, two-RBI outing at the plate.

Barnes (5-1) threw his third complete-game shutout of the season.

Princeton concluded the year 8-16 overall.

Golf

Britt records hole-in-one

* Tom Britt scored his first ever hole-in-one on Thursday at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. Britt used an 8-iron on the fourth hole.

Tim Bass and Milford Vick witnessed the feat.
