ROCKY MOUNT -- No. 1-ranked Faith Christian-Rocky Mount exploded for seven first-inning runs and cruised past Wayne Country Day 12-6 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference regular-season finale both teams Friday.

The Patriots (8-0 CPIC) parlayed several walks, a hit batsman and a couple of hits into an early lead against the Chargers.

"That was the turning point, the dagger in the heart right there," said WCDS head coach Michael Taylor.

Junior catcher Hil Tanner cranked a two-run home run during his first at-bat, and concluded the day with three hits and three RBI. Tyson Pearson (RBI), Cody Neal, Cole Davis (RBI) and Trent Proimos provided one hit apiece.

Thomas Kierski and Bryce Creger each doubled.

Neal endured the mound loss. Pearson supplied five-plus innings of seven-hit, five-strikeout relief. The Patriots plated five runs (two earned) and were aided by the Chargers' lone error of the game during that stretch.

WCDS (12-9 overall, 4-4 CPIC) returns to action either Friday or Saturday in the NCISAA playoffs. The 16-team field will be determined Wednesday.
