Trojans' Capps named pitcher of the week

HIGH POINT -- Preseason All-America candidate Carter Capps has been named the Conference Carolinas baseball pitcher-of-the-week.
The Mount Olive College sophomore threw the third no-hitter in program history -- and first-ever nine-inning "no-no" -- in a 4-0 victory over league nemesis Coker (S.C.) College. Capps logged nine strikeouts and walked three on the mound.
The North Lenoir alum retired 13 consecutive batters during one stretch and sat down 12 of the final 14 batters he faced. It was the Trojans' first no-hitter in conference play since 2005.
Capps lowered his earned run average to 1.52.
Trojans climb
MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College made significant jumps in the latest College Baseball Lineup, Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA Division II top 30 polls, released Tuesday.
The Trojans are ranked No. 1 by Lineup, and No. 2 by Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA.
Mount Olive posted a 4-0 record last week, including a three-game sweep of Conference Carolinas rival Coker (S.C.) College. The Trojans' pitching staff limited the Cobras to one unearned run in 25 innings of work.
The Trojans (20-3 overall) entertain in-state conference foe Pfeiffer University for a three-game weekend series, which begins Saturday.
The team will play a doubleheader at Scarborough Field, followed by a single game on Sunday.
MOC takes 2nd
WILSON -- The Mount Olive College men's golf team shared the best round of the day, and earned a runner-up finish in the Pizza Inn Barton Intercollegiate.
The Trojans started the day in a tie for fourth place, but surged into second with a team total of 292. Mark O'Hara and Dalton Gore led the way with even-par 72s on the 6,851-yard, Wilson Country Club layout.
Fabrizio Ceppi carded a 73, while David Shields and Scott Woodard both posted 75s.
Mount Olive's 292 matched the rounds of Queens and Barton. However, Barton began the day with an eight-shot lead courtesy of Dermot McElhennon's course- and school-record 64 in the opening round on Monday. McElhennon shot a one-under 71 on Tuesday and won the individual crown by eight shots.
The Trojans had two top-10 individual finishes in the event. O'Hara and Gore both carded two-round totals of 146 and tied for sixth in the 82-player field. Shields finished in a tie for 12th at 149.
Woodard and Ceppi both finished in a tie for 30th at 154.
Mount Olive finished ahead of five other Conference Carolinas programs and Barton's "B" team.
The Trojans return to action March 28-29 at the Bearcat Classic in Greenwood, S.C.
