Hunt takes down C.B. Aycock baseball

PIKEVILLE Growing pains are often part of the maturation process of a young team.

Charles B. Aycock overcame an early 4-0 deficit but Wilson Hunt scored two late runs in a 7-5, non-conference win on Wednesday evening. The Warriors swept the regular-season series from the Golden Falcons.

Dustin Alford's pinch-hit RBI double in the top of the sixth inning gave Hunt a 6-5 lead. Ches Lamm added an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning.

Aycock threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning with the tying runs on base and one out. Warriors' reliever Spencer Boykin retired Craig Murdock and Adam Pate to end the ballgame.

The Golden Falcons stranded at least one runner on base in every inning and finished with 10 runners left on the bags overall.

"We've got to learn how to come up with the big hit in situations," said Aycock head coach Charles Davis. "That was the difference in today's ballgame. We had runners in scoring position and we got the hits to get there.

"Then, we've got to come up with the hit to actually get the runs in. Hunt came up with the big hits and we didn't."

Jacob Page's three-run home run to center field in the top of the first gave unbeaten Hunt a 3-0 lead. Deion Doubledee added an RBI single. Page (three RBI) and Nygard each had three hits in the game.

The Golden Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to pull within 5-4. Cameron Taylor provided an RBI groundout. Murdock scored on a Hunt error and Bryant Stafford's RBI single scored Jonathan Taylor.

Craig Murdock's RBI groundout in the bottom of the third inning tied the game at 5-5.

Collin Dubose suffered the loss on the mound. The junior surrendered one earned run on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts in three innings of relief. Jeff Davis led the Golden Falcons with three hits. Stafford and Jonathan Taylor each had two hits and an RBI.

"I cannot fault our effort and I cannot fault our attitude," said Davis. "We'll get better by playing teams like Hunt and by being in key situations. If the kids will just learn from it and keep the same attitude and work ethic, then we're going to get better. That's all I ask them to do."

Aycock (3-2 overall) entertains North Lenoir on Friday.
