C.B. Aycock 40, Eastern Wayne 38
* PIKEVILLE -- Oh no, not again.
Randall Fulghum's offensive putback in the final 90 seconds lifted Charles B. Aycock to a 40-38 victory, and claimed a regular-season sweep of county rival Eastern Wayne on Friday evening.
Fulghum led the Golden Falcons with 14 points, including three crucial second-half putbacks that resulted in baskets. Brandon Winford added a double-double -- 10 points, 11 rebounds, while A.J. Mundle chipped in seven points.
Robert Kornegay and Lee Atkinson tallied 11 points apiece for the Warriors, who entered the game tied atop the Eastern Carolina 3-A standings at 7-2 with Southern Wayne. Lamar Best and Josiah Davis contributed seven and six points, respectively, in the road loss.
"Both teams played their butts off," said Aycock head coach Steve Moats. "It was intense, it was focused. Our guys did a great job protecting the basketball, made some smart decisions with it. If we improve our free throw shooting, that would help."
The Golden Falcons (6-14 overall, 5-6 ECC) converted just 5 of 11 shots from the stripe, and missed three consecutive front ends of one-and-one opportunities in the final 50 seconds of the game.
Eastern Wayne (12-7, 7-3) misfired on two free throws with 1:01 left in regulation. The Warriors surrendered seven offensive rebounds in the final quarter, including four in the last 60 seconds of the contest.
"At the end, we had a chance to win it," said Warriors head coach Marvin Bowman. "They were tough on the boards, got some putbacks... number 24 (Winford), thought we should have boxed out better (on him). We had some errors at the end.
"I give Aycock credit, they did the things they needed to do (to win)."
Eastern Wayne led 19-16 at halftime, but fell behind 29-25 after three quarters. The Warriors stayed within striking distance, and tied the game at 38-38 on Best's old-fashioned, three-point play around the two-minute mark.
Fulghum's offensive putback about a minute later sealed Aycock's fifth win in the new year.
Southern Wayne 78,
South Johnston 49
* DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne bounced back from a loss at Eastern Wayne with a 78-49 rout of South Johnston on Friday night.
Tony Smith led the Saints with 22 points and six steals. Delfawn Worrells supplied 17 points and Khari Faison added 13 points and nine rebounds. Bernard Gross had 11 points and eight rebounds. D.J. Collins finished with 18 points for the Trojans.
Southern Wayne (16-4, 8-2 ECC) entertains North Lenoir on Tuesday night.
Ayden-Grifton 61, North Duplin 33
* AYDEN -- Ayden-Girfton picked up a 61-33 Carolina 1-A Conference win over visiting North Duplin on Friday night.
Devin Oliver and James Kornegay each scored 10 points for the Rebels in a losing effort. Breyon Johnson added five points.
Girls' basketball
Goldsboro 43, Princeton 26
* Goldsboro pulled away late for a 43-26 Carolina 1-A Conference win over visiting Princeton on Friday evening.
The Cougars led 28-21 early in the fourth quarter but closed the game on a 15-5 run. Alexus Myles led the Cougars with 15 points and Talaya Lassiter added nine points.
Savanna Massengill scored 13 points for the Bulldogs.
Goldsboro (15-3, 7-0 CC) entertains Spring Creek on Tuesday while Princeton (7-13, 4-4) plays host to Ayden-Grifton.
Rosewood 38, Spring Creek 21
* Rosewood opened up a sizeable early lead and never let the Gators close back in during a 38-21 victory on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene on Friday.
The Eagles led 15-4 at halftime.
Logan Bill, Megann Tyndall and Kelsey Kornegay each scored six points respectively to pace the Rosewood offense.
Jana Price and Alyssa Borja each tallied six points for the Gators.
Rosewood travels to North Duplin on Tuesday. The same night Spring Creek visits Goldsboro.
Faith Christian 36, Falls Road 27
* ROCKY MOUNT -- Brianna Champion led the Conquerors with 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Christina Powell had seven points and five steals. Katie Watson supplied six points, eight rebounds and three steals. Faith (10-9, 7-2) entertains Cornerstone on Tuesday.
JV Sports
* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 74, Princeton 41 -- Quaviis Holloman scored 18 points for the Cougars. Shahim Muhammad added 16 points and Rodney Cook had 12 points. Jamaal George contributed 10 points.
* Boys' basketball: C.B. Aycock 39, Eastern Wayne 32 -- The Golden Falcons closed the game on 17-5 run, and clinched at least share of Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference title. Shakel Powell led Aycock with 13 points. Cam Johnson and Mike Williams contributed nine points apiece, while Greg Williams scored six. The Golden Falcons (15-3 overall, 9-2 ECC) conclude regular-season play at home on Feb. 10 against Southern Wayne.
