CLINTON -- Goldsboro had plenty of offense on Monday night, but could not get key defensive stops down the stretch in an 81-72, non-conference loss to Clinton during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day showcase at Union High School.
The Darkhorses capitalized on early turnovers and raced out to a 21-point lead at the halftime break.
Goldsboro cut the lead to eight early in the fourth quarter thanks to some fast-paced, full-court pressure and some easy looks in the paint. However, Clinton sank 11 free throws down the stretch to seal the game.
"This was the first time all year that we played a cohesive unit offensively inside and out," said Goldsboro head coach Patrick Reynell. "It was nice to compete with such a talented team, but if we could put together four quarters we could win games like this."
James Williams paced the Cougars with 26 points and eight rebounds. Devonte White added 14 points and six assists. Demarian Henderson finished with 10 points.
Goldsboro fell to 7-6 overall.
