BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Angel Dache pounded out 14 kills, and Mount Olive College began defense of its Conference Carolinas men's volleyball championship with a 27-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-18 victory over King College.
Sophomore outside hitter Adam Miracle provided 12 kills and John Nunns, who hails from Fayetteville, added 10 kills and hit an astounding .750 for the match.
Alejandro Rivera supplied eight kills, while Bjorn Metzger contributed seven kills and a team-high five blocks. JUCO transfer Jackson Mettechecchia passed out 48 assists and logged four blocks.
MOC had 13 blocks as a team.
The Trojans (1-1 overall, 1-0 CC) fought off two set points in the opening set. Mettechecchia and Mertzger combined for a double block, and a Tornado attack error gave MOC the set.
MOC scored the first two points of the fourth set and led wire-to-wire. Nunns' solo block gave the Trojans a 13-5 lead and King (0-2) never closed the gap.
No. 14-ranked Lewis (Ill.) University rallied from first- and third-set deficits to hand Mount Olive a 26-24, 25-15, 26-24 loss in the season-opening match for both teams Friday.
Dache paced the Trojans' attack with 11 kills and eight digs in his collegiate debut. Mettechecchia dished out 26 assists, while Miracle collected seven kills.
The Trojans travel to the Big Apple this weekend for non-conference matches. MOC is the guest of York College on Friday, and competes in the Stevens Institute of Technology Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
