Goldsboro girls give Bullock-Davis win in coaching debut

Girls' basketball

Goldsboro 41, Eastern Wayne 33

* Goldsboro saw an early eight-point fourth quarter lead shrink to two, but held on for a 41-33, season-opening win against Eastern Wayne Tuesday evening at New Hope.

The Cougars led 27-19 early in the fourth quarter before the Warriors' pulled to within 29-27.

"We just stopped hustling," said first-year head coach Goldsboro head coach LaTina Bullock-Davis. "When you stop hustling you lose focus of what you're trying to do. We weren't taking care of the basketball."

Eastern Wayne couldn't convert on key possessions late in the game. The Cougars scored eight of the game's final 11 points.

"We missed too many shots," said Warriors' head coach Tyrone Wagner. "That's really what it came down to."

Talaya Lassiter led Goldsboro with 15 points. Kasheika Wallace added 12.

Janielle Daniel scored 10 points for Eastern Wayne.

The Cougars (1-0 overall) entertain Rocky Mount Prep on Nov. 30. The Warriors (0-1) play host to Havelock on Dec. 3.

Midway 45, Rosewood 18

* Midway struggled to get its offense going against Rosewood on Tuesday night, but once the shots began to fall, the Raiders claimed a 45-18 victory.

The Raiders held a slim 6-4 advantage after one quarter. The Eagles hung tough through a physical second quarter to stay within striking distance.

The pace quickened in the second half and Midway out-scored Rosewood 14-3 in each of the final two periods.

Jana Kennedy paced the balanced Midway offense with eight points. Five Raiders tallied six points apiece.

Alicia Burns recorded five points to lead the Eagles. Logan Bill and Anna Ingram each finished with four points. Ingram added a team-high seven rebounds.

Rosewood (0-1 overall) entertains Lakewood on Nov. 30.

C.B. Aycock 27, Greene Central 26

* SNOW HILL -- C.B. Aycock built a healthy lead in the opening half and held off a late rally to beat Greene Central 27-26 on Tuesday night.

The Golden Falcons scored 23 of their 27 points in the first half.

Ivy Hartzell paced the victors with 13 points. Imari Howell added six points.

C.B. Aycock (1-0 overall) travels to Wilson Hunt on Nov. 30. Greene Central (0-1 overall) visits North Lenoir tonight.

Boys' basketball

Greene Central 64, C.B. Aycock 37

* SNOW HILL -- Greene Central scored early and often en route to a 64-37 win over C.B. Aycock on Tuesday night.

Kelsey Dixon and Bobby Waters each scored 14 points to lead the Rams. Malcolm Dawson added 13 points and four rebounds in the win.

Brandon Winford paced the Golden Falcons with 13 points. Marques White added 10 points in the defeat. No other C.B. Aycock player scored more than one field goal in the game.

C.B. Aycock (0-1 overall) will travel to Wilson Hunt on Nov. 30. Greene Central (1-0) is the guest North Lenoir tonight.

Princeton 89, Cleveland 63

* CLAYTON -- Ben Jacobs ignited the Princeton offense and the Dawgs rolled over a Johnston County rival for a second straight night.

Jacobs scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in Princeton's 89-63 win over Cleveland High School on Tuesday night. Wes Wood added 21 points in the victory.

Julian Reed led the Rams with 20 points.

Princeton (2-0 overall) travels to Cleveland on Nov. 30.

Southern Wayne 55, Jacksonville 43

* JACKSONVILLE -- Southern Wayne used a balanced scoring attack to upend Jacksonville 55-43 on Tuesday night.

Four Saints finished in double figures led by Khari Faison with 12 points. Bernard Gross added 11 points. Delfawn Worrells and Carlos Council each finished with 10 points.

Southern Wayne (1-0 overall) faces West Craven in the opening round of the Southern Wayne Thanksgiving Invitational on Friday evening. Tip-off is 8 p.m.

Wrestling

Cleveland 48, Goldsboro 36

* CLAYTON -- Goldsboro High returned to the wrestling mat after nearly a two-decade absence and dropped a 48-36 decision to first-year program Cleveland High School on Monday evening.

Five Cougars collected pins in the season-opening affair.

Rasheid Mallette (125 pounds) pinned Josiah Evans 91 seconds into their match. Shaquan Oliver (140) and Dakeem Holloway (145) also recorded first-period falls against Joel Alvelo and Josh Sanders, respectively.

Jose Arias (215) and heavyweight Elijah Slater also won by fall in the opening period of their respective matches.

Jamelle James received a forfet at 130 pounds.

Golf

Walnut Creek Ladies Assoc.

* Pete Reaves claimed play-of-the-day honors for weekly play ending Nov. 23 on the Walnut Creek Country Club links. Faye Franklin and Gaye Bryant captured low gross and low net, respectively. Evelyn Rose seized low putts.

On Nov. 16, Hiromi Sueki was the play-of-the-day winner. Franklin and Reaves grabbed low gross and low net, respectively. Rose and Linda Cannon shared low putts.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: C.B. Aycock 45, Greene Central 43 -- Michael Williams led the Golden Falcons with 15 points and 11 rebounds. C.B. Aycock improved to 1-0 on the season.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Spring Creek d. Rosewood -- No game details submitted.

* Girls' basketball: Rosewood d. Spring Creek -- No game details submitted. The Eagles remained unbeaten in three outings this season.
