SOUTHPORT -- South Brunswick grabbed a sizable first-half lead and eliminated Southern Wayne, 42-14, from the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A East region football playoffs on Friday evening.

Marcus Hankins led the Cougars' ground attack with 163 yards and four touchdowns. NeJuann Watts added 130 passing yards and a touchdown.

The Saints compiled 145 yards rushing. Quintae Bradshaw rambled for 81 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. JaQuan Cobb provided 40 yards on 11 totes.

Southern Wayne had 162 yards of total offense.

"South Brunswick is a very, very good team," said Saints' head coach Bob Warren. "We were not able to successfully continue to move the football in the first quarter. The kids competed hard the whole game. Defensively, I thought the kids played well."

Warren's team won four its final fix games and concluded the year 6-7 overall.

"We knew to start off the season that we had a very young team that had talent and we just had to gel as a team," said Warren. "Our team is very coachable. They kept listening, and by mid-season we were starting to understand blocking schemes and defensive schemes, and it showed going into last night.

"I think this group really came together and started believing that if they just kept working hard it would come together and it did."
