Area runners compete in 1-A finals

KERNERSVILLE -- Rosewood junior Nick Britt and Goldsboro High junior Bryan Johnson each finished among the top 65 runners in the season-ending, N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A boys' cross country championship meet Saturday.

Britt ran the 5K course at Beeson Park in 18 minutes, 4.98 seconds -- which good enough for 40th place among the 119 competitors. Johnson ended up 64th overall in 18:43.54.

North Duplin's Caleb Day, a senior, was 95th in 20:17.37.

Princeton claimed 13th overall in the team competition. Sophomore Daniel Toler emerged the Dogs' top runner with a 78th-place effort of 19:23.43. Teammates Quinn Doherty (19:46.22) and Matt Edwards (20:20.8) placed among the top 100.

Ethan Anderson (20:30.58) and Lane Doherty (20:32.91) completed the team's scoring.

On the girls' side, Princeton senior Hattie Doherty placed 53rd overall in 22:23.23. Teammates Abby Rubio (24:55.74), Taylor Smith (25:22.28), Sarah Toler (26:27.28) and Harlie Silvernail (26:31.93) completed the team scoring.

Rebeka Fitzgerald and Emma Woodall also ran for the Dogs, who ended up 13th in the team title chase.

Rosewood's Chloee Lamb took 88th overall in 24:35.81. Fellow Eagles Christine Conger (27:07.63) and Kasie Elliott (27:09.98), both freshman, also competed on in the cool, wet conditions.

North Duplin's Samantha Wilkins was 90th in 24:51.34.
