Greene Central 6,

Cedar Ridge 3

* HILLSBOROUGH -- Greene Central swept the doubles matches and turned back Cedar Ridge, 6-3, in quarterfinal-round action of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2-A dual-team playoffs on Tuesday evening.

The Rams (18-8 overall) travel to Eastern Plains 2-A Conference nemesis Tarboro High for the east regional championship on Thursday. The teams split their regular-season series.

"We battled for over four hours, and in the end, just a few points seperated us," said GC head coach Donald Clark of the four-hour marathon. "This was a total team victory. We had five new starters this year, and most people didn't expect a lot out of us, but we are in the final four in the state."

The tandems of Lauren Carraway-Jessica Hatch, Brittany Colie-Laurie Sutton and Hayes Lovett-Kayla Radford helped seal the outcome in doubles. Carraway, Lovett and Colie each emerged victorious in singles.

"Lauren, Hayes and Brittany really gave us great leadership in addition to their outstanding play,"said Clark. "These girls all lead by example. They just never quit."

Tiebreakers were needed to decide four singles matches.
