Struggles continue for MOC women's volleyball team

DUE WEST, S.C. -- The struggle continues.

Junior Jamie Murray recorded a match-high nine kills, and Erskine (S.C.) College swept Mount Olive 25-16, 25-18, 25-19 on the Conference Carolinas women's volleyball scene Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans suffered their sixth consecutive three-set loss of the season and 10th overall. MOC also played without head coach Cole Tallman, who has temporarily stepped down due to health reasons.

Erskine used a 9-0 run to gain control of the opening set. The Flying Fleet (13-5 overall, 10-1 CC) seized a seven-point lead in the second set, and pulled away for the three-set sweep behind three kills from Lauren Stewart in the deciding set.

Stewart concluded the match with seven kills and three blocks.

Ashlee Reuter emerged the Trojans' offensive leader with eight kills and four blocks. Kailey Preece handed out 22 assists.

Mount Olive (3-15, 1-9) returns home Friday for a conference battle against in-state rival Queens University-Charlotte.

Soccer

TIGERVILLE, S.C. -- Sarah Porter recorded the game-winning goal in the second minute, and Mount Olive College blanked future Conference Carolinas member North Greenville, 2-0.

North Greenville will join the league in 2011-12.

On the men's side, Scott Mitchell logged a golden goal in the 99th minute in the Trojans' 2-1 double-overtime triumph over the Crusaders.

Porter scored off Janaya Finney's first assist of the season. Cara Paxson provided an insurance goal in the 43rd minute off Lindsey Stanley's assist. It was Paxson's fifth goal of the year.

MOC keeper Lyndsey McIntyre earned her third shutout of the year.

The Trojans (5-6-1 overall) visit Conference Carolinas rival Pfeiffer University on Tuesday. Kickoff is 4 p.m.

Frank Boateng put the Trojan men ahead early in the second half off Chris McClaugherty's assist. North Greenville collected the equalizer in the 58th minute before Mitchell ended the contest with an assist from Vieux Sarr in the second 10-minute OT session.

MOC keeper Shane Parham posted six saves between the pipes.

The Trojans (3-7-1) claimed their second straight overtime road victory, and begin a four-game homestand against in-state rival Chowan University on Wednesday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Amon Field.
